I am going to build a new system. Which gpu to select?

The R9 280X is better priced generally and has an extra GB of VRAM, helping performance in some ways. Although, you could also get a 4GB GTX 770, which offers more usable VRAM buffer.

What are you going to be doing with the system?

What components is the GPU going to be paired with?

Where are you located?

I really wish that we'd just make organic hardware already, that grows and adapts to the demands it needs to meet. That way, grannies' computers can be floppy sacks of organicness and the 12 year old Minecrafters will look like the guys that only do bicep curls, and the nerdy programmers will finally have justice, with their body-builder rigs that skipped leg day.

They perform the same. Go with whichever one you like the features better.

It pretty much comes down to which features you want. Nvidia offers software like the GeForce Experience and shadowplay, which I personally like. However AMD's card might offer better performance at the cost of lacking software. That's my two cents.

280x, then. It's generally cheaper and performs just as well, and often better, than the 770.

I was asking if you weren't doing video editing.

CUDA generally works better for video editing and such, except in cases like Sony Vegas, where they have optimized their software for OpenCL very well. If you are not making videos using something like Adobe programs, then I'd go with the 280x, and you could still do video editing while sacrificing the efficient use of some plugins using your video card. If you ARE video editing, often, then I'd go with the 770, as CUDA is more widely used.

The r9 280x gets my vote. Its cheaper, has an extra gig of ram, and outperforms the 770 in BF4. Although the 770 probably slightly beats the 280x in more games than not by a small margin, at least in 1080p.

I would get 280X, both similar cards but 280X has more VRAM higher mem bandwidth and overclocks better

Haha, I tried The Game DVR but atm it sucks HARD, I can't figure why it's recording random 1 sec clips and Shadowplay had less of a performance reduce right now (this can all change of course, I 'll just wait for it to come out of beta).

They both do the exact same thing, there should be NO difference, but with that weird bug, like you said, it is in beta.

I don't think they're quite on the same level yet. Nvidia's shadowplay supports more games than AMD's game DVR. But once AMD catches up, you're right there wouldn't be an argument to be made anymore.

280x, i have a windforce card and i love it, has all the features i need and helps in adobe stuff and vegas if you edit, and the cards perform well enough that you dont even need shadow play really, but it helps.

Someone has to make a guide on which card is optimized for you. Then some mod can sticky it, so we don't have these constant threads about whether which one is better.

If your in Australia, The 770 is about $100 more, but I don't see it being $100 better, they are basically neck and neck on the performance scale.  It's been a while since I had any experience with AMD drivers so I can't comment on them but based purely on price/performance the 280x wins quite clearly.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.
