What else should I try?

I'm trying to get my mom's old netbook running again, and right now it has Chromium OS (version 26) on it, and it runs, but not the greatest, and some things don't even work on it at all (trackpad being one of those things). I need something that will run fast and is fairly kidproof. Specs are below.

 

Intel Atom N455 @ 1.66GHz

Intel GMA 3150

1GB DDR3 1066 CL5

250GB 5400RPM HDD

1024x600 screen

Windows XP Essentials maybe? Dunno how kidproof that is though.

Just choose a Linux Distro, you may want to pick a lightweight one if you want more speed. I like Mint personally, but it's mostly personal preference on what one you want.

Would Arch be any good? Or should I bother with Windows 8.1 Pro 32-bit?

Crunchbang is probably best to go for a netbook because of how lightweight it is. It depends if that won't be complicated enough to operate for the kid though.

 

EDIT: Puppy Linux is also a good alternative

I know a Linux distro that is very kid-proof but I think it's only in Portuguese.

4.4 rc2 release is fairly stable :) 5GB partition is enough. Rest can be used as extcard mount.
