AX860, GTX780SC SLI and those sweet Corsair cable kits!

DanKepke

Yo guys!

I'm preparing for my first pc build since a couple of years and i got some questions about the sleeved Corsair cable kits! I want to use the Corsair AX860 to power a EVGA GT780SC SLI together with a i7 4790K, but i'm not sure if the PSU will survive my ideas!

So to my questions:

- Will the AX860 stay alive and not nuke my room if i use two 6+2 PCI- E pigtail cables from the kit to power the SLI?

- Can i profit from the AXi Series with the Corsair Link stuff? I heard i can monitor temps and powerconsumtion of all the hardware~ :o

I am thankfull for all tipps and help! And now back to the WAN show!

You will be fine with the pigtails as long as you aren't pushing a lot of power through them. A single rail PSU also helps.

Don't worry too much about Corsair Link. If the price difference is high, go for non-i model. You can get a cheap Kill a Watt or similar unit for monitoring power draw.

Well, 250W per pigtail seems a lot to me :P My notebook takes 300W for a 680M SLI and a i7 3920XM, so i don't have the experience to judge that.

Well, Link sounds really nice, i will have a better read in Link for my H80i und maybe the AXi.

I wouldn't take the AXi over the AX. AX is made by seasonic and axi is made by flextronics. Theyre both equally in terms of performance, but the AX one uses a quieter fan along with a much better fan profile including semi-passive mode. The fan profile on their AXi series except the ax1500i (got a complete redesign) are rather wonky, ramps up to its max speed quickly to cool it down happens sometimes way too much and when the fan is off it makes a quiet clicking noise. AX doesnt have any of these issues.

A custom fan profile can be set with Corsair Link, takes all of 2 minutes. That shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Are you sure? There are only options for default mode and fixed mode. I don't think they would allow you to make a custom fan profile, the risk is kinda big. I asked George a few months ago if they fixed the fan profile for the ax1500i (hence why I have it now).

Here he explained a little bit more when the dancing happens:

Isn't the only issue, the fan clicking (its a very quiet click but it was noticeable for me and @Enderman noticed it as well) every 10secs. Here's the video showing it, start listening after the fan complety stops.

Here's another, http://vidup.de/v/gWWBq, well those issues are fixed by just setting the fan to a fixed mode but the fan might be too loud for you but its sad that you have to use software to make your psu quiet. When I had the ax860i, facing the fan down and in a very hot environment around 33° ambient the fan was dancing literally at idle. Clicking noise isnt a defect, according to ramguy its normal: http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showpost.php?p=616175&postcount=24

Yeah this issue only happens with the AX 760i, 860i, and 1200i. The 1500i doesn't have this issue, and neither do the non-i versions.

HXi does not have this problem either.

The 860 will be enough, just make sure you get the right cable kit, for this particular model

The most common result of insufficient wattage is a paperweight that looks like a PC
