PC for editing RAW

I just bought a Blackmagic camera and now need to put together a list of components of what I'll need in order to edit the RAW footage. I would like to build the PC as cheaply as possible, which I know is tough, but I'd like to be around $1500 for the everything except the peripherals. I understand how to build a computer and how everything goes together, but I don't know anything about RAW except for that I need a good PC for stress free editing. If anyone can give me a kick start in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Probably should have added that I'll be editing 1080 RAW and not 4k or 2k.

What software will you be using to edit the footage?

Everything looks good and I appreciate you putting that together for me. A couple questions about that configuration.

1. Is the Xeon processor better than the i7?

2. Does the motherboard have onboard wifi or would I need to get a wifi card?

3. I definitely like the GPU. May I as why you chose PNY over Nvidia? The Nvidia got great reviews on Amazon.

Also, I was reading over on the Blackmagic Designs forum about not having enough VRAM for editing RAW footage. I see this card has 2GB VRAM. Is that enough to handle the RAW editing?

That's the configuration I had on mind. What's a 280x? Should I be concerned about VRAM?

A 280x is an amd graphics card, Linus has done a few videos on shopping for graphics cards. [ URL=https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c3BKuNXdM5A ] like this

  1. The Xeon processor is a Haswelll processor and essentially an i7 with an enhanced memory controller and lacking an integrated graphics processor.
  2. The motherboard does not have WiFi. A PCIe card would be needed.
  3. If you check the Amazon listings you will likely see that the part number starts PNY. PNY manufactures Quadro cards. Nvidia is the company that designs them.

For HD you should be fine with 2GB. If you want more on a Quadro card you would need to move up to the K4000 (~US$800) for 3GB. The alternative is to use a gaming gpu like the GTX 780 which is available in 3GB & 6GB versions.

I like the quadro card. In your opinion, would the K2000 be enough to handle the RAW footage? Everything else is looking good to me.

You need to be more specific about what you mean by "handle the RAW footage". But in general I would say that 3GB or more of vram would be better. The problem becomes budget, as you can see below.

I've got the BMPCC which shoots 1080 CinemaDNG RAW and ProRes only.

Brob - I just mean for the computer to be able to handle the RAW files. I don't have any experience with raw whatsoever so I don't have a clue what even comes off the camera. But I've read you need a powerful computer to handle it.

Then you should be fine with the first build.
