New monitor recommendations

So my trusty old 2nd monitor died today. Sad times. I've not had to buy a new monitor for years and I've not kept up with modern offerings. Trying to look myself I'm totally overloaded with info.

What I need:

  • Minimum 24 inches
  • Would like a min res of 2560x1600
  • Will mainly be attached to a Macbook Pro late 2013
  • Will also be attached to Win 8.1 machine with an Asus 660 Ti (has a full sized display port v1.2) & HDMI port
  • Used mainly for photo work, media playback and some gaming on the Windows machine

Not asking for much am I?  :P

Can anyone offer some suggestions or have had a really good experience with a monitor they own?

Thanks!

Budget? Also, depending on the game, a 660ti will have a hell of a time pushing that resolution.

This isn't a x1600 monitor but this would be my recommendation to you. Comes in at a good price has a excellent response time. 3 year warranty where they pay both ways and send you a new one as you send the old one back. Has all the display options you could ever want. It's a IPS display so it'll be good for professional work as well as gaming. You could also look at the proart monitors as well however keep in mind they can get pretty pricey as you'll see.

I agree that it may in some cases be a bit much for a 660Ti to handle the resolution and you may want to upgrade that if you intend to run at that resolution.

for photo work and media playback. look around for 21:9 monitors, they are amazing and the wide aspect ratio makes it great for editing.

Gaming isn't a massive concern tbh as I hook the PC up to my TV when I'm gaming. I'll be upgrading the gfx down the line too.

Max budget would be about £500. It doesn't have to be a brand new monitor, I've seen several people recommending certain 2nd hand dell monitors.

Cheers

I've been looking at a few Dell 21:9 monitors online. The photo work/media playback is going to be about 95% of what the monitor is used for.

Any particular make/models you would recommend?

I like the look of this one. However it's listed as LED not IPS. Isn't LED suppose to be inferior for photo work? As I say I've not been keeping up :P

The backlighting is LED but panel is IPS. IPS and LED are separate.

well, I can tell you that AOC has amazing colour reproduction. A lot of people would recommend LG, however the price just doesn't justify them. I am more than satisfied with my AOC Q2963PM. I was comparing it to a dell U2913WM before I bought it since they were in the same price range and the dell didn't have the image quality I wanted.

I really like the AOC Q2963PM. The price is really good and seems to have good reviews across the board. If I was to get a 21:9 monitor I could get a vesa mount for my old faithful ASUS V243H and turn it to portrait mode. The possibilities!

Kryptonite, couple of quick questions....

  • Do you know if there's a 27' version of that monitor? I had a look but couldn't find one.
  • A big complaint seems to be how poor the out of the box calibration was. Did you have to do a lot of fiddling around to get it the way you wanted?

Cheers everyone.

no, unfortunately I don't know of a 27" version. (I have seen other brands that have 25" 21:9 monitors though)

The calibration was fine for me out of the box though you might want to change it to user preference which turns blue, red and green to 50 instead of red 43 green 43 and blue 52. (though this is what people do, on my specific monitor I find white to then be a bit of an offwhite colour and the preset warm (43,43,52) having the best colour accuracy)

What about that LG 21:9 1440p monitor?

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it

price, I don't think it's in his budget as he was looking for a 27" as opposed to the 29" I recommended.

I do like that AOC monitor that you linked. I would stay away from LG to be honest. I know that may be a bit weird to go out and say LG is a bad brand. I firmly believe that LG is one of those budget brands you'll normally see them a bit cheaper in every medium they sell in. With my cd drives they broken within the first year or two. With my monitors they've lasted for a pretty good while then died out pretty quickly. I have a easier time with a company that has a good warranty program and a stronger product personally.
