Dell XPS 15 Storage Upgrade Question

Root

I'm currently trying to decide what type of laptop to get for college next summer. I wouldn't be getting one this year, but I would be looking at the laptop model and wait for next year's hardware upgrade. My question is if it is possible to upgrade a Dell XPS 15's storage from a 1TB hard drive with 32GB mSATA solid state drive to a 1TB Samsung 840 EVO solid state drive. Right now, I'm currently looking at a Dell XPS 15, but for roughly $200 more than the 512GB model, I can get the mid-teir model and buy a 1TB solid state drive. I saw a video on YouTube were someone did this upgrade, so I believe it is possible.

Would it be worth doing? Would I lose the warranty for upgrading?

Yes you can do it, it will not void your warranty

Is it worth it? depends, I would install windows to the msata ssd for fast boot speeds, unless you needs your programs to work faster it is hard to say if it is worth it or not

For the money you can probably just get a better laptop

Thank you for your input. I would get a gaming laptop, but I like the slimness of the Dell XPS 15. It would be mostly for college anyways, and I have a desktop to game on. Plus, I'm more of a console gamer, mostly because I play with my friends which play console games.

:o that sort of language will get you killed around here :P haha

Well fair enough, if that is the laptop you are set on, most people would argue 1tb of SSD storage is pretty overkill

I might get killed, but I will say the truth.  :P Plus, I heard that the MSI G70 Stealth Pro has cooling issues and I personally like the design of the XPS 15. Anyways, if I end up using the laptop more than my desktop, I can easily kill 500GB from having videos and music on it (so I can watch/listen videos/music on the go).

Lets not get into the whole console vs pc debate (but PC)

There are tons of other laptops around

how much is the XPS 15 you are looking at?

Roughly $2300 to $2500 CAD (plus tax and possibly shipping) depending if I get the 512GB model or the other model with the SSD upgrade. I'm more looking for light and thin. I would get a gaming laptop but the ones I would get a too thick and heavy, I would be carrying it a lot so that's why.

Have you considered the new Razer Blade 14? I think the current XPS 15 has the older GT 750m while the new blade has the GTX 870m. Good luck :)

For that there is the razer blade, aorus x3, macbook pro 15" (750m), GS60 Ghost, lenovo y50, alienware m14x, some clevo models

All sorts!!!

I have looked into the Razer Blade 14 (newest one). But, I'm looking at $3,000 for the 512GB model plus extended warranty ($300) and tax, so I would be looking at $4,000 which is out of my budget. The Macbook Pro (750m) with the standard configuration is $2,700 plus AppleCare and plus tax, so I would be looking at $3,500. I wouldn't get the Macbook as the college course I'm going to take is computer programming. And, it would cost more to get a Macbook and purchase a copy of Windows to do BootCamp. The Alienware m14x is discounted so I can't get that.

Also, please keep in mind I'm looking for a thin and light laptop. The Alienware m14x is discounted so I can't get that. But, with that aside, the Aorus X7-CF1 is looking pretty good. For $2,600 with Newegg's 2 year extended warranty coverage and 2 year accidental damage coverage, it's looking not that bad.

Yeah the aorus is awesome

About needing windows for the macbook, no not really, all my friends that are at uni and got a degree in Computer Science (one at oxford) all use macs, dont forget you can get educational discount!! :)

Yeah not saying all of those were perfect, just a few off the top of my head as alternatives worth considering

Thank you. The only reason why I said that is because part of the course is that we learn Visual Basic which I think is only available for Windows. I'm not a Windows fan boy, so I would be open to OS X. I'm mostly waiting for a response from the college if I can use a Macbook Pro for the course.

So far only Apple is offering education discounts. But, I would have to lie as when you search for your college and program on Apple's website for discounts, it doesn't say programming but it says graphic designing.

I would most likely find out sometime next year when I get accepted and prepare for college.

EDIT: Here is a picture where you pick your school. I think I can get it as I believe computer programming would be considered technology. I'm still waiting for an answer from the college though.
