People usually say Apple makes simpler OS's. Windows Phone is shit, so please, please don't even consider it.

But myself hating on Apple, I would probably get him a Nexus 5 :P

I am not trying to sell things but htc one or any other will be more than great. They are very user friendly and durable .I have a htc one and no matter who plays with it they figure it in about 5 mins and that's because unlike stock android sense is very easy to use.Iphone is great too is also very easy to use and has great look but is a bit smaller and talking of performance also a little weak that lets say a s4 or 5 or a htc one.I will never buy a samsung galaxy s4 or s5 just because of that cheap plastic they are made of and because of the software which is a mess.

Beware of him that is slow to anger; for when it is long coming, it is the stronger when it comes, and the longer kept. Abused patience turns to fury.

My dad used a few smart phones previously and now that he is using an iPhone 5s he absolutely loves it! He knows how to use the app store, multitasking and all sorts. Very simple and elegant to use and he loves the looks and build. It doesnt look like a teenagers gadget

A few weeks ago I gave my mum my old iPhone 4 and she is becoming a pro! She is facetiming people, sending texts with emojis and even reading her emails on it

Windows phone is quite simple but when I tried them on it, they just couldnt get their heads around it

I think android would scare them, I have various android gadgets/tablets and things but they always use their iphones or grab my ipad when they can. They even prefer it over using a laptop because its easy

I use window phone, and it's a great OS, but the downfalls of it are that there are some apps not supported, and my phone is shit so is lagging a lot now. iOS is probably the best for smartphone no0bs, as it practically hold your hand through the set up. I would not recommend android for a beginner, as there is so much that can go wrong with it quite easily. I tried it with my mum, and that is the last time I'm ever doing it.

I'd sugest maybe something like a Moto G as an upgrade. It's cheap, does the job really well and isn't too "scary" to use.

Hmm ok, i for one have only used android so far, haven't tried apple because it was too expensive, is it really that simple to get used to it? If i get an apple for, how hard is it to connect to the pc and transfer data, my dad is not really an apple fan, he uses good old windows pc.

My dad was looking for smartphone.

I told there are 3 types: Windows phone, Android and IOS.

He found the WP interface to his liking (my dad never touched any touch device) also liked the IOS but to exspensive.

Then I helped a few people at work and they got also Windows phones and Iphones and no android phones.

I found out with a small survey that android is not good for people that don't know about GUI's.with touch.

WP would be good if you go budget like a Lumia 635 or something. (Nokia has offline maps which is freaking awesome for roadwarriors on the go like me :D )

iPhone if there is no budget and its just works.

Android, no comment I'm always sceptical with Android + old people who never ever used a touch device (this does not mean i hate android i even use a Xperia Z1 as my main phone)

For someone new to smartphones who isn't at all 'tech smart' I would probably suggest them an Apple device simply because it's more user friendly and simple compared to Android. In fact I would probably never suggest a stock Android device like a Nexus 5 because it can be a bit much for a new user. An android skin like touchwiz on the S5 (as much as I hate samsung and touchwiz) is way more user friendly and more tailored to casual smartphone users, I've never played around much with the HTC's sense or the LG Android skins or Sony's so for those I cannot say.

If he's just entering the smartphone world I would recommend an iPhone primarily or MAYBE a Nexus 5. Android would probably be harder for him to start out on but he'd get more out of it once he got used to the OS.

As simple to use as ios is, I personally believe that as our parents grow older, they'll start to develop vision problems. Because of that, the iPhone's small screen will not be adequate enough for your dad to read text on, my mother has a hard time reading on the 4s that I handed down to her. I would recommend any android or windows phone with a big screen- the note, one max?, and lumia 1520? I believe samsung even has a mode to change the phone to elder friendly mode.

Get him a windows phone, i got a lumia 520 for my mom and it is the best purchase ever, it is simple enough to the point where she doesn't ask me how to use something every 5 seconds, the os is niceley layed out, it has enough apps for basic smartphone use, it doesn't lag, and the apps crash less often than android or ios. It also comes with the best navigation app i have used and the text is large and clear.

If he needs a little bit more functionality and can live with the tiny iphone screen, get him an iphone, it is still simple and fast but you get more apps.

And if he is really tech savy get him a stock android phone (as i would not recommend a skinned one) like motorola or nexus device.

Netbook:

Lenovo Ideapad S10-2, Intel Atom N280, (1x1)gb DDR2 667mhz, WD Scorpio Blue 250gb 5400rpm, Zorin OS 9 Lite

Ok, from what you guys have said, and from my own opinions, iPhone is an easy phone to use, but its expensive, another problem is the small screen, my dad is very new to touch devices. Might wait for the new iPhone's to come out since they are getting bigger, but the price might be too expensive for my tastes and his.

On the android, i know its not that easy to use for newcomers, but i have heard that the Samsung galaxy s4 has an easy mode, which could help my dad.

On the windows phones side, that is uncharted waters for me, my mother has recently gotten the lumia 525 from my older sister, and my mother seems to like it. But from what you guys said, it is an easy phone to use, so which phone from that line would be appropriate, needs to have a nice screen which is not too small.

My dads fingers are very large as well, so typing is a bitch for him.

The lumia 630 has a 4.5" screen and the 930 (icon) has a 5" screen, if he wants even bigger there is the 6" 1320 and 1520.

Why do you want to convert your dad to smartphones btw? Will he benefit from it honestly?

Nevertheless wp8 android and its are all different in ways although iPhone isn't cheap ergo not a good purchase if it turns out badly. A lumia 520 or 630(wp8) or a moto e(android) are all pretty risk free investments all for around 100$ or so, so it won't break the bank if your father doesn't like it. I'd personally go with wp8 since it's a much lighter of and its pretty hassle free and can do the same basic tasks(I guess your father won't play heavily or do really complex stuff from the get go)

He is getting in to smart phones and you suggest he gets a top of the line 5" flagship? Great idea.

Also, Windows Phone is definitely not shit. You can set it up to be very very simple and easy to use and I would easily recommend it for both high end users and new users alike.

  • 2 weeks later...

So, i have finally chosen, some of you will probably be perplexed by my choice, but i have chosen the Nexus 5 and hopefully he will enjoy it. I showed him the iPhone and he used it for a short while, he thought it was too simple compared to my  Samsung Galaxy S II which was running CyanogenMod. Funny thing was he wanted the back button (cancel button) which was on my phone which was not on the iPhone. I didnt get the chance to show him a Windows Phone, so i took that out of the equation. Thanks again for the help guys.
