$1000 Rig Planning, Suggestions, Help, and Advice

Go to solution Solved by brob,

Thanks for the reply. I learned mostly from other people on other forums that seem to like AMD over intel for whatever reason. Lol. I would like to know how to set up Windows to automatically send large files to the HDD. I did not know it was possible to do that.  Here is the new build made with suggestions from you guys.

CPU Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core $232.97 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 ATX LGA1150 $93.99 Memory Team Vulcan 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 $68.99 Storage Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 240GB 2.5" SSD $94.99   Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM $54.98 Video Card XFX Radeon R9 280 3GB Double Dissipation $199.99 Case Corsair Graphite Series 230T Orange ATX Mid Tower $59.99 Power Supply XFX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V $49.99 Operating System Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)

$89.98

                                                                                                                             Total:  $945.87

I aped for the larger SSD because I thought it would be easier to manage with the larger space, but if I could learn how to automatically redirect files I would jump down to the 120GB SSD.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/redirect-folder-new-location#1TC=windows-7 for Windows 7.

http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2024314/windows-redirecting-folders-drives.html for Windows 8.

The build looks good. Although I don't see a cpu cooler. If you plan to take advantage of the Z97 motherboard and unlocked (K) processor something like the Hyper 212 EVO would be a good idea.

Hello everyone, thanks in advance for the help. All opinions are welcome :) I am putting together a new rig for my cousin. He has a maximum budget of $1000. I want to keep the price as far away from the max as possible while still giving him the most up-to-date rig I can. I am reasonably sure that his price constraint chooses AMD for me, however if I am wrong please tell me. The primary use of this machine is going to be 1080p sweet spot gaming. It will probably only have one monitor but I want to leave him the option of having more down the line. No peripherals needed.  All is in $US

Here is the current build.

Currently Newegg servers are having issues. Give pcpartpicker a try, others will be asking you to do so anyway, and it will find the best prices for you.

Here is one slightly over 1k that is of the Intel variant. I can't see what you listed because of newegg server issues, but what I can say is that $125 for an AMD mobo seems kinda high for a $109 cpu, the ram seems spendy, and he will want more than a $170 gpu for 1080P.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($232.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme3 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($109.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Kingston Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($74.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($79.00 @ Amazon)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)  ($89.98 @ OutletPC)
Other: Case ($95.00)
Total: $1112.89
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

You could easily drop below 1k by going non-K, and an H97 motherboard with stock cooler. You could also go for an AMD R9 290 GPU for a tad more

Your friend really should change the case. I've put together a build that uses a Corsair case which is similar to the Antec one with none of the short commings. I have kept it around the price point of the OP. But an i5-4690K with Z97 motherboard and Hyper 212 EVO cooler would fit in under the $1K budget.

My research had made me think that the FX4300 was similar in performance to the i5 when paired with the 990fx chipset. If I do go with Intel I would much like to get the newest Z97 chipset to go with it though. What is the reason you guys are going to for the intel i5? I also doubt that my cousin will deal with the hassle of a smallish SSD lol. He would fill the drive up in 2 days and get mad that he had to move things to the HDD. Is the normal HDD such a big bottleneck? I was pleased to see that he could get an r9 280 but is the performance increase large enough to justify the increase in price? I am led to understand that the r9 280 would be kinda overkill.

Not sure how you reached your conclusion as to the relative performance of an i5 vs an FX-4300. http://www.anandtech.com/show/6396/the-vishera-review-amd-fx8350-fx8320-fx6300-and-fx4300-tested shows that the FX-4300 on an 990FX motherboard isn't even close to the performance of the previous generation i5-3470.

In Windows you can make the hdd part of the video, pictures, music libraries so things get directed appropriately. And yes the difference made by the addition of an ssd, especially in a lower performing system is dramatic.

Here http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2bpvdC $808,49

+ OS https://www.g2a.com/windows-8-professional-32-64-bit-cd-key-global.html $20,93

= TOTAL $829,42

There is still room for getting better GPU like R9 280x or R9 290 for example which would be $990,41 (with R9 290) http://pcpartpicker.com/part/powercolor-video-card-axr92904gbd5tdheoc

g2a.com seems sketchy... windows 8.1 pro for 20 bucks? Is it a legit site?

The build looks good. Although I don't see a cpu cooler. If you plan to take advantage of the Z97 motherboard and unlocked (K) processor something like the Hyper 212 EVO would be a good idea.

I forgot about the cooler lol. I am definitely going to get the 212 evo. Thanks for your help :) Do you have any input about g2a.com that WereCat posted about?
