Closet Desk

elkenrod

Workspace is a resource.  Many of us just don't have the space that we would like because of our living situation/finances.  This does not mean that we are out of luck.  Efficiency my friends, is what it's all about.  Desks, and computer setups in particular, tend to take up much of our already limited living spaces.  Some people have sought out to combine their desk and bed space; or alternatively move their desk to an underutilized space, such as a closet.

Google, "closet desk" and you get setups like the following:

These are cute, but not exactly suitable for a Techie.  The space utilization is excellent, but the themes aren't exactly my thing.  No big deal, just apply the same concept, but with a theme that's more appropriate.

Well, I guess there is one big deal... the Status Quo.

This is bad.  The image was even taken after I took out all of the clothes that were hanging in the closet.  After an hour or two of "purging" I achieved this result.

Now that it's all cleared out, here's just a torrent of pics.  The first being the previous desk area.  I have an area for sitting and for standing.  It takes up a large percentage of the living space.

I had some bed risers that I never used.  They ended up being excellent for this desk.  It hit the sweet height spot for either sitting or standing while computing.

The image doesn't show it, but there is enough clearance while the chair is in the closet for me to shut the closet doors completely.  Stealthy

Just for reference.  My PC is not currently stored in the closet.  There is plenty of room for it inside, but I didn't want it in there with the closet door closed.

Cable management, or lack thereof.  I don't have a power outlet inside the closet, nor was I going to look into getting one installed.  The monitor and power cable can all fit underneath the door comfortably.  At some point i will bundle them and make it a bit cleaner.

That concludes what I did this past week.  It was just making sure that everything fit nicely.  Next week I will be adding the shelving/decorative stuff to make it feel like a "room" in both function and aesthetics.

Nicely done! I considered this myself, but ultimately resurfaced a table and painted it red and black just a while ago.

I would think you have enough room in there for your tower.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch
