ASUS PB278Q Question

Geekazoid

Hi guys,

I just have one question in relation to the ASUS PB278Q PLS 27" monitor. I know how popular this monitor is, however, I have some concerns about severe backlight bleed that can result in yellowing on the display that's especially noticeable on a pure white background. I haven't had much luck with IPS monitors monitors that I've bought, they've always had some sort of discolouring on screen and this has always annoyed me.

So, for those who own the ASUS PB278Q, have you experienced any severe backlight bleed on your PB278Q that resulted in discolouration on screen?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Nope. Looks perfectly fine to me.

If you notice bleed when you get one, send it back. Just cuz there's a warning about bleed doesn't mean you need to live with it. Send that broken thing back to Asus.

That said, mine is totally fine, three months in.

I believe all  IPS/PLS/VA panels suffer from the "glow effect"

if the backlight bleed is severe then it should be replaced under warranty though

My PLS panel does not suffer any of these issues and has some amazing viewing angles, possibly even better than IPS

Maybe PLS remedies the glow issue?

I mean, the PB278Q is listed on its spec sheet as being a PLS/ips display.

IDK I've never really had a decent monitor for a long time before. Not very experienced in decay over time.

It still has a slight glow but tftcentral mentioned that this particular panel was very uniform, had amazing off centre viewing angles and i believe PLS allows more light through the subpixels

(dont quote me though) just what I read on there

@Geekazoid read up on tft central about the monitor

I know what the glow is. That doesn't concern me because I understand the difference between backlight bleed and the glow that is characteristic of such display technology. It's good to know that you too have a good one. :)

I dont use the Asus though, so... no comment on the differences (they probably use a similar panel though)

Yeah, you're probably right.

So far the only thing I haven't liked about the Asus is the in-built speakers. Obviously those are going to suck, and I always use headphones anyway. Other than that I have no complaints about it.

Seems like there's a fair chance of getting a crappy panel though, judging by the reviews. If you get one that has no issues, it should be very nice.

Yeah, well that's what I've been concerned about. That's one of the reasons I thought about going with the PB248Q 16:10 monitor. However, I really wanna stick with the 16:9 aspect ratio though.

Does it have to be the Asus monitor? I've heard very good things about the Dell UltraSharp 2713HM. It's got pretty similar specs and is about the same price (at least where I live). I don't know if it is actually any better when it comes to the backlight bleed issues, it just seems like less people complain about it with this monitor.

(Keep in mind, I have not tried or even seen either of them. I'm just relaying what I've heard other people recommend)

I'm worried about the same things right now. I've also been looking to buy the PB278Q, but the reactions are pretty mixed. Youtube reviewers all seem to love the monitor, though.

No, it's just preferred for various reasons.

I haven't had great luck with Dell monitors so I tend to avoid them. Thanks for that suggestion anyway.

Yeah, YouTube reviewers do seem to love them. Decisions, decisions .

I have one and it looks great. Maybe not perfect, but the PB278Q is definitely a quality monitor. Buy one with confidence.

It's a 2012 monitor, and damn I want to smack myself due to this obsolescence, but in the PB278Q's price range, is it still the champ in mid-late 2014?

mine has a tiny backlight bleed in the top lefthand corner, but it doesn't show/effect the screen whatsoever unless on black screens.

I have been looking into VA monitors because they tend to not really have this problem. But I have a feeling that a VA monitor's weaknesses would annoy me.

My main concern is on white screens with discolouration. I think also at such a price as this monitor is you kind of expect virtually no problems. But unfortunately, unless you get a $1,000+ display that usually has uniformity compensation built-in, you run the risk of getting a dud monitor/display. But hopefully I'm lucky and get a pretty decent one. :)

Well guys, to throw a spanner in the works, I've decided that I'm going to go with an LG or ASUS 29" 21:9 monitor. It suites me quite well because I already have two 1080p displays so the height of a 29" will fit in well with what will be my setup. This will give me a combined 6400x1080 resolution. Plus a 21:9 display will be great for my video editing hobby. :D
