What size of SSD to upgrade to?

GaryC

I currently have a 256Gb Samsung 830, and it's starting to fill up very quickly. I'm thinking to upgrade to either a ~500Gb or 1Tb SSD. However, I'm not that certain which size and brand to go for. I currently use this desktop for gaming, but also engineering calculations like ANSYS, Matlab and Tecplot for fluid dynamics uses, so it has to be able to get a lot of writes and re-writes as a scratch disc. If I look at $/Gb, the 1Tb drives are of course cheaper, but I'm not sure if I'll be 'overpaying' for space I won't need.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: Just to add, I'm in Australia, so places like Amazon or Newegg might not be as cheap for me. Also, I have a 4Tb drive for general data storage.

Edit: nvm it's over...

Well, if you think you'll use more than 500gb then get a 1tb.

If your going for that size and you say you need a lot of read and write cycles, look at the Samsung 850 Pro.

That's a bit more than what I'd like to spend.

I vote for 512GB because the new mx100 really gives great value. If you want 1TB, just raid 0 2 of them

Amazon has the 500GB Samsung evo for $290AUD shipped. So that's pretty good. If you want that size.
PCCG is $319 plus the usual $12 shipping so total $331.
$41 difference.

CORSAIR RIPPER: AMD 3970X - 3080TI & 2080TI - 64GB Ram - 2.5TB NVME SSD's - 35" G-Sync 120hz 1440P
MFB (Mining/Folding/Boinc): AMD 1600 - 3080 & 1080Ti - 16GB Ram - 240GB SSD
Dell OPTIPLEX:  Intel i5 6500 - 8GB Ram - 256GB SSD

Thanks for the suggestion. MSY has it for AU$279 and I can pick it up in store. They have the 1Tb version for AU$485.
