No, 2560x1600 will become the new 1680x1050 as those are both most commonly 16:10 aspect ratio.

2560x1440 will become the new 1920x1080 because those are most commonly 16:9 aspect ratio.

 

It's funny how there are more pixels on the 1600p model but pretty much all the displays with that res for a desktop come in a 30'' and as a result the actual pixel density is a tiny lower than that of a 27'' 1440p monitor. (maybe 8ppi)

1440p is to 2160p what was (and still is) 720p to 1080p.

 

They all have the same 16:9 aspect ratio.

No I`m not, as i wrote earlier 1440p is the new 720p it`s exactly four times bigger, as is 4K to 1080p.

 

The "awkward" one betwwen 1080p and 4K your looking for would be 3360x2100.

 

I don't see any awkwardness with 1440p it`s exactly double the width and double the height of 720p.

I think 1600x900 is the what you're referring to.  The "inbetween" resolution between 720p and 1080p that no one ever designs any content for.  Yes, I think 2560x1440 will become that.  It's a resolution that's really only used in the computer world, and not in home theater, much like 1600x900.

Technically, most games right now should run no problem on 1440p max on the top of the line cards (295x2 as an example). If anything, AMD and Nvidia need to start offring cards that can power 1440p at high or max at the price range of the 770/280x. Hopefully with the GTX 800 series and the R9-300 series.
