HDD at 52%, what to do?

H4X3R

I just checked HDD Sentinel Pro 4.4.0 and saw that my HDD was running very hot (max of 46 in the past few months) and that it is at 52% health.

What do i do?

--What i plan on doing is backing everything up to my external 3TB, then what?

Edit: At 14th June 2014 it was at 100% Health

It is a Toshiba 1TB

Pee on it for liquid cooling.

You gotta do you girl. I always say you gotta do you. And if he's doing him, then who's doing you? Because right now, it seems like no one's doing you.

Kindly escort your HDD to the nearest dumpster and never look back.

Unless you don't value your data, then just leave it as it is :P

HOLY BALLS I GOT SCARED TO DEATH!!

I GOT THE FF ERROR ON MY MOBO....turns out i plugged out the sata power connector to my H80i while cable-managing my HDD down to a fan

I put the HDD ON a fan and i have a 200mm fan blowing at it. It is now @ 30 degrees (still pretty hot considering the circumstances).

I have a spare 2TB green lying around so i'll use that once this one breaks. Most important stuff is on my SSD anyway.

So you don't have a problem then :)

Don't cool your HDD. A few independent studies (Amongst which http://static.googleusercontent.com/media/research.google.com/en//archive/disk_failures.pdf, see figure 4) show that the HDD performs most reliable at around 35-45c.

Interesting. And odd. Totally didn't expect that.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

It's still @ 31, so no prob. I do however have 26 DAMAGED sectors, will a defrag fix that? If not, how can i fix those sectors / get my health up?

No. A defrag has nothing to do with damaged sectors.

If it's a few months old, then call the manufacturer AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and RMA the HDD under the included warranty (Should be between 1 and 5 years long, depending on the specific model and make).

You can't repair damaged sectors. You can use "check disk" to remap those damaged sectors to spares, but if you've got 26 already, your HDD is dying SOONER rather then later. Get it replaced under the warranty NOW! If you've got that 2TB spare drive, then use that until your replacement arrives.

Don't think so. You can try. Maybe the controller will reallocate those sectors but usually when they show up the spare sectors often have already run out.

To put it simply, a hdd will die once it reaches 50 bad sectors, at least in my experience. Please buck up and make effective your warranty asap.

I got the HDD from a friend (for free) and i had 0 bad sectors back then.

He is currently in new york so i can't contact him.

Looks like i'll sell it or throw it away.

Just defrag it and use it man - I think that application is wrong - Ultimately if it fails, claim warranty and you wont lose anything.

Edit: Since it was free, you wont lose anything at all.

Erm, defragging it will literally do nothing to help with bad sectors. There is literally no point to running a defrag to help him.

@H3X3R in the short term, open Command Prompt and run:

chkdsk /r

This will scan your HDD for bad sectors and attempt to remap any remaining spare sectors.

Additionally, if you do a "Full" format of the HDD, it will do the same thing.

But this will not "Fix" the existing bad sectors, it will just remap them to spare sectors (if available) or mark them as "bad" and will tell Windows to pretend those sectors don't exist.

However, once bad sectors start appearing, it's a warning sign that the drive is toast soon.

You said that the drive is a few months old, and you also said that your friend gave you the HDD. Was it new when he gave it to you? Where'd he get it from? How long did he have it before giving it to you? As long as he's had it less than one year, and will be back from New York before that one year period expires, then wait for him to come back and get him to help you RMA the drive.

However, I would check with the manufacturer first. Some of them only require the Serial Number for validation of warranty. You may not even need to provide a receipt. I would recommend checking this out ASAP.

If he wants to defrag, let him defrag - There's really nothing much he can do at this point, plus it was a free drive.

The point is to give him correct information. He came here asking for help. Giving him incorrect information or affirming his own incorrect information will not help him and is against the spirit of LTT forums. Plus anyone who comes here with a similar issue will now know the correct thing to do, as well as what won't help.

I completely agree with this, I never said defragging would actually help or fix his problem - I don't feel I gave him any misinformation, he asked if he could defrag and I gave the simple answer of yes you can.
