Are the 780/290 Becoming a Standard?

Just sort of an opinion thread, what are your thoughts?

Do you think because of the 780's price drop awhile ago, and the standard price of the 290/290X, that these cards are becoming more of a standard for gaming and even editing machines? (Most likely the editing machines are using Sony Vegas/Adobe Products obviously).

Now I've already typically asked what GPU(s) people are running in their builds, but again, what are you running, and are you happy with it? If you DO have lower than these cards (the 780/290/X), would you love to own those cards for your gaming/possible editing needs?

Thanks for the future chats/opinions guys. :)

They are the premium 'standard' for GPUs but most people have 770/280X and lower.

GTX 760 and R9 280 will be very popular too.

Well what I'm referring to is, are they becoming more of a regular standard than premium. Yes, they have a premium price point, but do you think that's what (even if they can barely afford it or can't afford it at all) what people usually at least try to aim for in at least a gaming rig?

Yeah 780 kinda more popular than it should be. cheap card. I just don't know how they plan to change up the market if they want to. It's either make same products more expensive, or actually push for a more high quality better product.

I would say if you're building a rig then that's what you're trying to aim for with your money as the only limitation yes definitely the case.

I think more people will end up with the 290/x, the price difference between that and the 780 isn't worth it IMHO. I think you'll also see a lot of R9 270/x on budget builds, and 750Ti's on lower budget ones. The 760/280/x maybe in builds around $800. I think the one that will be less used will be the 770, since it's price is near the 290/x.

Owning R9 280X. Happy with the card as I'm not doing massive games or tasks. Not sure if I would be happy owning a more powered card as there is no need for it. Would more or less just idle all the time and the current card will serve enough for the next 2 years.

Bye LTT. That was an interesting journey on this board. At least here you see how not to do it. I'll go shaking my head about this place.

Right now the premium starts with 780 ti as the lowest and goes to titan black R9 295X2 and finally the cursed Titan Zed

I believe they are going for both (at least hopefully). My prediction is that, for example, the GTX 870 comes out. The 870 in my mind for about 400 dollars (maybe 350) will be a repackaged 780 and the 880 more powerful (slightly) 780 Ti for about 500 to (hopefully not) 650ish dollars.

If you had a more powerful card, you'd probably crank the details up even higher/most likely play more intensive games that you may have been interested in.

Ew...the Titan Z....Seriously people if you're looking at that card JUST.BUY.TWO.TITAN.BLACKS. DONE.

EDIT: Or even better, just buy TWO 780Ti's BOOM. Money saved, price to performance = Epic.

Refurbished 780's/the ZOTAC 780's (and even the 780 Tis) are priced better towards the AMD counterparts.

here is my take

if you can afford the GTX780 6GB version

pick that first and later add another one for the ROG Swift gaming monitor

but my pick will be the 290 first and a IPS monitor like the Asus PB278Q

then add another 290 for extra power and for 60+ FPS

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Oh really? I didn't know that. Here prices are pretty different and I didn't find those when I looked at US prices.

IT's interesting what they will try to do since they already have so many cards under the 700 series, that it would be hard for them to do their normal rebrand and tweak some cores and give it another name. All the remakes of 780 and 780 TI with aftermarket solutions, and Titan. They will need to not rebrand anything, and give us something new, because they cant really put out a rebrand 780 without them already having the same exact product but under another name.

I'm very limited to budget so I'm not getting the top-line of a released series as it get's replaced with the next series soon. All this hardware technologie gets pushed so fast by the manufacturers so why waste money on it when it's been rated technical-outdated in 6 months?

http://www.evga.com/Products/ProductList.aspx?type=8&family=GeForce+700+Series+Family US Prices lol. This is EVGA's "B-Stock" which is their refurbished line up of products. As you can see the ref SC 780 is 439. That's the price of a 290 with a good cooler on it (and cheaper actually than the best cooled Sapphire Tri-X cards). The 780 Ti actually costs the same as a 780 Classified (which is closer to the price of a 290X which immediately makes the card a winner over it, as the Ti is obviously more powerful). What's even funnier is as 780 Ti's are mostly priced over 650 USD so no, that IS a steal lol.

You must be new...you know the 770 is the 680 and the 760 is the 660 Ti right?

At it's release and still going (selling) strong, the 780 played and still is playing games/new games on their highest settings at good frame rates, if someone bought a 780, it'd last them about a good 2 1/2 or more years, if they wanted, for more power, all they need is another 780. A 280X or 770 is not going to last anywhere near as long at highest settings on newer games.

Certainly not. Even Linus admits he wouldn't go that high if he didn't do it professionally.

This class of Hardware is for rich people/performance enthusiasts/professionals

I'd say a GTX760/ R9 270x is more of a standart for the average gamer and even those have quite a bit of headroom for most of the games out there.

If you play at 1080p, a 280x is plenty enough for around 2 years. But the 3GB frame buffer will be a problem in 3GB 780 is much as in  280x.

But i really can´t defend low-end cards that much as a titan user.

Actually Slick even stated himself that the 780 Ti is perfectly fine for 1080p gaming (although the person should still at least go for a 1440p monitor) as it still couldn't max out Crysis 3 and Far Cry 3 (I'd almost imagine it can't do this with Metro:LL) and keep a consistent 60FPS.

I disagree, I'd say the 280X/770 is a bit more of a standard for normal gamers. Though the 270X and 760 are still very popular cards.

I also wouldn't say "certainly not." As the 290 and 780 are stupidly popular and selling VERY well.

I meant the frame buffer is going to be a problem if significantly higher resolution than 1080p.

Most people game at 1080p and 1440p I think we're fine.
