Another Fractal Design Define R4 & H100i Topic...

Go to solution Solved by moos,

Alright, that would be awesome! I will try to fit it into my budget. Hopefully by the time I do gather the money (I'm 15 and with no job), some prices will go down or something. Who knows! Thanks for all the help as well! I think this case (pun intended) is solved! haha

I stand corrected on the offset mounts...  It was the Arc Midi and R2 that do.  However, the h100i should still fit ok as it is on of the thinnest AIO's available.

Before I start, I would like to say hello to all of those who take time out of their day to read and/or assist me. I am very new to custom computer building, so pardon me if I say something incorrect. My issue involves the Fractal Design Define R4 Mid Tower case and its compatibility with the Corsair H100i. I have read many forum posts and watched many videos regarding these 2 parts and I have seen many varying answers. Many say the cooler fits fine, although many say the exact opposite. Overall, I have seen that the issue is very dependent on which motherboard you decide to use in the build. For those who may need it, here is the build I am in the middle of organizing. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/OfficialCensor/saved/3JTPxr

As you can see, I plan to purchase the Asus x79 Deluxe, along with the Fractal Design Define R4 and Corsair H100i. My question is as follows:

Does anyone know if these 3 parts would fit together? (assuming I mount the cooler to the inner top of the case)

I would like to get some responses from some those who are experienced with both the case and cooler, although all feedback is appreciated. Thank you for your time and please consider assisting me! :)

~Andrew

If you're going to build a x79, you need to at least use a 4930K to make it worthwhile. The 4820K is slower than i7 Haswell. YMMV of course.

I agree. There are very few cases where you would need Quad Channel RAM, and not need a 6 core.

I strongly suggest either going z97 with a Quad or x79 with a Hex.

Thanks to both of you for the quick reply and advice! I will definitly look into your suggestions. Do either of you have any info about the Fractal case and Corsair H100i?

Also, I would like to add that I really do like the x79 Deluxe because of its on board WIFI, 2 Ethernet ports and many USB ports. What do you recommend I change aside from the case, cooler and motherboard?

I am really, really sorry but I have no experience with that combination. I would assume, however, it would work since the h100 is a slim radiator...

Then again, I can fit a 240mm radiator in my Core 1000, which did involve a jigsaw...

I'm not the right person to ask.

Thats alright, no problem! I made an edit to my first response. I added in: "Also, I would like to add that I really do like the x79 Deluxe because of its on board WIFI, 2 Ethernet ports and many USB ports. I chose to change a few things based on reviews I've seen, personal preferences, and some cost changes.

CPU - Hex Core. Simply because Hex Core.

Hard Drive - I picked a Seagate 2Tb over the WD Black simply because the Price to GB is better, and I've had no issues with Seagate. I did have to warranty a drive once, I accidentally damaged it, and they replaced it no questions asked. 5/5 in my book.

GPU - Chose the Asus DCU2 simply because you picked an Asus motherboard, and I find DCU cards do quite well temperature, noise, and QC wise.

Power Supply - Swapped for the RM series Corsair. It has more watts, it's 80+ gold as well, Silent until 50% load, full modular too.

I like the changes you made, and thank you again for the assistance! I do have one question about your changes though. Is the hex core really necessary? I will only be using the computer for games and video editing. What are the major differences between the quad and hex cores?

The Define R4 should have the offset mounts.  There's a few custom cooled build logs out there for the case.  You should be fine with the h100i unless the x79 memory banks are in a strange place, which I don't believe they are.

If you are video editing, it will most certainly make a difference. It helps with streaming as well. Not to mention, it helps (cough) futureproof (cough) a little bit more than the Quad. If you can fit it in your budget, i would do it.

Thanks for the reassurance! I thought that the north bridge heatsink on the x79 may get in the way, but its hard to tell! haha :)
