Crossfire 290 with 750W

PeePeeSoftware

I have a EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 and a 290. Will I be able to pair another one? I've checked and it seems like I'm on the edge. I don't plan to overclock the cards, if I have to remove my OC on my CPU, I will.

it will be like 700+ watts

If you do that, the load on the 750w PSU will make it somewhat louder than both of those cards on a 850w PSU.

My 650w is above 60% load and it's Begging to be replaced, judging by the fan noise coming from it when under load.

Bigger is better - especially for PSU's.

800w Min IMO. But depends on if your overclocking other things too, if not, stock as, 750w will be fine, if overclocking, aim higher.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Possible, Don't OC tho and if possible undervolt. If you don't want to risk it sell your PSU and buy a 850W.

Cutting it close, but it should work. Don't expect to overclock your cards very much.

Well it is a Gold Certified PSU. Does that mean anything?

It's a 3570k.

You should be ok, just don't go about HAM overclocking your GPUs.

You'd be on the edge, I don't know why people recommends 750W PSUs for crossfire/SLI, then people run on these issues and curses not having spent $15 more on the past.

just power efficiency

or just better power savings over the long run

Would I be on the edge... of glory? I'm in Canada by the way and and extra 100W is like $50.

on the build i have below which is still arriving in pieces pcpartpicker (r9 290 CF) is saying 721W so i think you should be fine just to give an idea, take it with a grain of salt

On Canada it shouldn't be that much, SuperNova G2s differ $20-30 between 750W and 850W.

If you don't overloclock it shouldn't be a problem, it should fit the 750W, but the real capabilities of CPUs and GPUs show when you take them up higher, specially with the headroom the GPUs have these days.

Also, with time PSUs become less capable on the max amount of wattage the can handle, if you are spending $1200 on GPUs you might as well put a little bit more on the PSU.

Eh, Is it worth it to get a new PSU and another GPU? Should I just stick with this?

EDIT: Ignore this comment, I posted a bunch of stuff I thought was right. Totally wrong though.

Unless, I'm reading something wrong here, you should be totally fine. That links to the power consumption with a power hungry overclocked older CPU, with 2 radeon 6950s at full load. According to Anandtech benchs, the 6950 crossfire seems to consume more power than crossfire 290s. I could of course be misunderstanding something here though. If so, someone please point it out so I don't accidentally recommend something I shouldn't be. :)

On Guru3D benchmarks the cards only consume about 650-700W under load. But he recommends 800W. I guess times have changed.

Sorry about my comment, xD

I linked a 6990 (Which I figured would be about the same as two 6950s considering circumstances), but I compared it with one 290, not two. I'm an idiot.

It's fine man. As far as i know 750 is the sweetspot for 290 XFire.

I'd not say 750W is the sweet spot, it's a certainty that the PSU can run his CF system, but it'd be too close for comfort imo.....plus, the unit would be running hotter than normal since it's being pushed. For a pair of R9 290's, I'd say a decent 850W PSU would be ideal......enough headroom for OC'ing and possible future upgrades and/or expansion. When I buy a PSU, I don't care about it being run efficiently or optimally, I care about the POWAH! :D  See my sig, all three rigs in my sig are powered by good class 1kW PSU and higher.....the heck with efficiently, gimme powah!

Even my 4th rig (obviously not in sig) - C2Q X9650 @3.7ghz/8GB DDR2 1066mhz KHV RAM/Palit GTX580 3GB/multiple HDDs/etc -  is being powered by my first 1kW PSU (circa 2007/2008) which I had gotten years back. It's the first gen 1kW Olympia series reviewed by jonnyguru (in a 1kW shootout vs PC P&C 1kW Turbo Cool) and is longer than most PSU's. I've had that PSU since '07/'08 and it's still goin' strong........and still a powerhouse to boot. That's why I believe in having PSU's that are more powerful than needed, for future upgrades and such. FYI, I have a spare Seasonic 850W Bronze Certified PSU that I was using previously (the OP1000 was a spare then), when I tried adding an MSI HD6970 Lightning to the Sapphire HD6990 that was already in the rig, the 850W PSU choked badly....was unable to run the system stably. But, the moment I'd swapped out the 850W unit with the OP1000, the system ran very nicely. Pay till it hurts for a very powerful PSU, the heck with efficiency and consider future needs......the PSU is one component where you can 'future proof' it by getting more than what is presently needed.
