Microsoft to merge all sepearte version of Windows into one

GoodBytes

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has confirmed that the company will merge all major versions of Windows into one operating system.

Satya said:

"streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system."

"this means one operating system that covers all screen sizes."

Before, under Steve Ballmer control, each Windows was made by a different team. Now it will be 1 big team.

This will allow increase consistency and experience between all platform, by sharing the same architecture, and allow the creation of universal Windows apps that work across all devices.

Sounds interesting, I hope that Windows 9 is a much better product UI wise than Windows 8. Although 8 isn't bad IMO it's UI is kind of annoying to use on a desktop.

This still doesn't explain why they fired Barnacles and the others in the testing division though ;(

Has anyone used Windows Server 2012? Having the Windows 8 interface on a server is really annoying.

I don't think that Windows Server is included in those versions, although I may be wrong

well if they are merging then they might of had a surplus of people in the testing division for this unified windows team

Isn't it all the same? I mean, it's all mother freaking Windows. They can't make a x86 version work on ARM so... And they shouldn't mix Win server with desktop Windows... Either they're going to mess up BIG TIME or they'll do nothing at all.

Windows on ARM is possible. Windows RT is just that. It could point that "Windows RT" will be be open like the x86 version that we use.

As for Windows Server I think it will still be sold separately, but Windows Server team will be same as the current Windows (which, that, was probably already the case).

I think what Microsoft meant, is Windows Phone, Windows, and Windows RT.

Microsoft got big, because you had this small company, competing with giants (like IBM). Microsoft was super agile, and fast to adapt to the market needs, while IBM and other large companies at the time were slow, as they were too big. Microsoft mass lay offs is probably to allow the company to be more agile, and stop being late on new things. All the changes Steve Ballmer did before leaving and Satya is continuing, is all about how to make Microsoft a company that work as a team, as a massive force, and be able to adapt quickly, and provide a better experience to users. A needed move, if not... they'll be like Blackberry, or worst disappear.

It doesn't mean it will work, but it should.

Am I the only one who doesn't get it?

By versions, do they mean WinXP, WinVista, Win7, etc? Or do they mean make 1 OS for every platform? Because if so, this is old news.

OS platform. So, Windows, Windows Phone, and Windows RT if I am not mistaken.

I want to say Windows Sever, but I believe it is already the case, and for sure sold separately.

No. They mean no Windows 8 Phone. Windows 8 RT. Windows 8 (PC). It will all be ONE platform. No clue if they'll still have Windows 9 and Windows 9 Pro, but they won't have Windows 9 Phone or Windows 9 RT.

Will my phone be compatible with desktop applications now?

its actually a good thing for developers ONLY if they can manage their shit and stop charging few thousand dollars for their MSDN accounts.

This quote intrigues me. Is it possible we'll see games on Xbox compatible with windows 9?

Mess? I think not. This will give them all one major branch to commit to. Which will make bug smashing and other issues much easier to resolve. It's better to collaborate as one instead of separate teams working on their own branch. Tho each team will more than likely only handle a certain portion of the code base.
