Fans not spinning

Virgule

Hi,

After reinstalling my crossfire setup, I noticed a problem. The fans on my bottom gpu aren't spinning. They are nudging a bit every few seconds but they don't spin.

My top card is a msi r9 290 gaming with kraken g10 and x40. Nothing is plugged on the gpu's pcb fan header. Rather the 80mm fan (vrm fan), the pump and 120mm fan (x40's rad) are chain connected to a mobo header.

My bottom card is a msi r9 290 gaming with stock cooler. Fans don't spin.

Msi afterburner has the option to copy settings for similar cards active.

Please help.

Cards are both detected in device manager, msi afterburner, gpu-z.

Sh*t. Changed bottom card to top (only one running) and only 1 fan spin.

run Unigine and see if the 2 fans spin

it may be a power saving feature

GCN have a zero core technology while will shut off the 2nd GPU when not gaming

MSI twin fan have some feature which depending on the temps may only run 1 fan instead of 2

Either this or it could be that you have a defective fan controller... dragoon20005 is right put the card under load but keep a very sharp look on the fans. If the second one doesn´t kick in stop the benchmark before you damage the gpu.

Well it seems the problem resolved itself.

I'm not sure exactly what I did right but I checked EnableULPS in registry and it was already set to 0. After a few tries, I noticed an increase in performance in Unigine Heaven and like that, the 2 fans were spinning. Thanks for the help guys.

ULPS is a state which helps to save power

but can be wonky at times

so you can leave it as what you did and game away
