Is the new Nvidia tablet worth it?

Dubesta11

Sorry if something like this was already posted, but I always wanted another tablet after my Archos 101 died a while back (screen broke). For 300 dollars (not including accessories, which I would buy anyways), is this the best thing to buy? I hate Samsung so that's a no for any of their products, and I want something larger than 7 inches.

Depends on what you plan on using it for.

I'd say so. I preordered a shield tablet with the controller and a 64gb sd card because I killed my digitizer on my Sony Tablet S trying to repair the 3.5mm jack and to use as a steambox/htpc. Its specs are pretty solid and i reckon it will last for a few years running strong. In the price bracket it's in having microSD (useful for big movies), some nice speakers, a 1200p screen and the beastly tegra K1 it's a pretty great deal.

proud owner of alienware 13 with graphic amplifier and also a alienware X51 gaming PC!!! really powerfulL!!

That's what I was thinking, it has very good sounding specs. I might wait a little bit for someone like Linus to review it first.

If you were thinking about a good tablet already, sure. If not or just from a gaming perspective, I'd personally pass just because I don't think there's enough game support yet. This is subject to change but highly unlikey: Android is not stellar for games. There's plenty of them, and some of them even sort of fun but none that really need the Tegra K1 processing muscle.

Also if you own a gaming PC with a 700 series Nvidia GPU and for some reason want to game uncomfortably away from your computer this might be for you.

I have to agree with Misanthrope here.

It's a nice tablet, and if you want one, sure its great.

But for the price, I would prefer just to get a Windows powered tablet. But I see it more as a productivity device, and not entertainment. So for sure the Windows tablets would be running (at this price range) Atom CPU, so definitely not great for gaming.

That aside, the great majority of Android games are as Misanthrope said, designed for the lowest common denominator, pretty much, so nothing will push that K1. I really don't get what Nvidia doesn't pull out the GPU from there and make a dedicated GPU for tablets running Windows. It's more powerful then Intel solution, yet consumes less power and doesn't need a heatsink. Anyway.

If I had the money right now, I would order one. I want a 7 or 8 inch Stock andriod tablet to replace my iPad 2. I was looking at the Nexus but if this one is only a little more (Which it is here in the US) then I would go for the Shield tablet. Front facing speakers and a slightly better build quality (I am basing this from the pictures) than the Nexus is a deciding factor for me

Yes, same with iOS... There isn't really a game on the App Store that is truly hard to run. The Apple A7 has a very respectable GPU, not quite as fast as the Tegra K1, but comparable. Now with the App Store, I'd say there are more high profile games (graphically), but still not really hard to run for anything higher than A6X driven devices.
