gtx 770 vs r9 290 for 2560x1440

silentanarchy

I have a problem because I know the 290 is better but I want to buy the up coming nvidia shield tablet. I think I may go with the 770 for the game streaming capability.

290 hands dowwn, compare it to a 780, even then, it's still 150$ cheaper for the same performance

Depends what's more important for you, having a proper PC gaming experience, or streaming to the shield.

some people don't have that type of money.

They do if they save. Why waste money and get something that is inadequate for his needs?

If you need SHIELD compatibility along with 1440p gaming I would get the 780. You can probably find a used one at a decent price.

2gb vram ain't gonna cut it on 1440p. I'm capping my vram on bf4 at 1080p let alone 1440p.(Just an example)

Save some cash and get the 780 or say bb to shield and get the 290.

290 all the way, it even beats the 780 in 1440p. That 4GB of VRAM and wider bus helps.

If you are on a budget, have you considered buying refurbished?

Newegg sells a refurbished GTX 780 from EVGA w/ ACX Cooler for $424.99. Picked one up myself almost a month and a half ago; it works flawlessly. Overclocks great and runs pretty cool.

Holy crap that expensive for a damaged/reconditioned GPU. You can get a brand new aftermarket R9 290 for same or less price.

OP doesn't want to go to AMD for his stated reasons, this is a good alternative allowing him to purchase a decent card for 1440p instead of going with a 770

Like most gimmicks OP will stop using the Shield Tab for gaming in due time and then he will be pissed that he did not by up a nice GPU. $440 for a refurbished 780 is just ridiculous.

This.

That's a great price for a 780 and you'll still get a warranty.

Not sure how you see that as ridiculous when the MSRP on the same card is $500. So you are saving a ton of money. It also has EVGA support if anything does go wrong. Used 780's are going for $400 and up on eBay. So $440 with an EVGA warranty is pretty good as opposed to buying blindly and used from someone on eBay.

You can get a better GPU brand new for less money. This is why I say this pricing is a fail.

When the R9 290 and the GTX 780 are overclocked to their max overclocks the performance differences are marginal. Yeah if you are looking at stock benchmarks the differences might be slightly greater, but who cares about stock benchmarks?

So OCed they are similar in performance and OCed they are still similar ? Still way over priced for a used referbed 780 though. It's to bad you have to OC the 780 in order to compete as it still costs allot more and the performance does not match up with the price.

Still does not meet OP's requirements which invalidates anything you say about it.
