So u r saying i need a proper external hdd cable for the hdd to work and not some substitue usb cable which happens to fit into my external hdd usb port... right???

Yes..

My friend lost my cable to my external hard drive.He has given me a substitute usb cable but my pc doesn't recognize my external hard disk. What do i do??? Will getting a new proper usb cable fix it?????

PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!!!

Yeah with the WD PassPort I have I had to use the WD cable otherwise it just didn't work for me.

No!!! If that would be true the usb standart would be useless!!!

it seems to be a usb cable for a phone!!!

thats a regular usb2 cable try a usb3 cable

and usb2 has less power than usb3
