Am I the only one who think a single gpu is not enough for 1440p?

Toto123456

So got the r9 290x for about 5 weeks now. just ordered another used 290x from ebay and is on its way.

I game on a 1440p monitor while older games are perfect for this gpu, however 290x struggles to play at ultra on most AAA titles, it was okay though, the mojority of the time its running 60-90fps but there will be some scene where the game fps drop to 25-40fps which is pretty bad, I would rather play on a 1080p @ultra but have smooth gaming experience for the entire game.

some games like metro last light, metro 2033, watchdogs are also unplayable at 1440p.

if I know this before buying my pc, I probably stick with 1080p 144hz ultra, itx build, cpu air coolers, and a single r9 290(non x)

I have to say I kinda regret going for this set up, however I have already bought it so I really can't go back but going forward LOL!

who agree with me?

I hope you are not turning on anti aliasing

Nope, I never really find AA interesting to me, it blurs an image and make them look soft and not sharp

BF is pretty easy to max anyway IMO

Can't believe 780ti can handles crysis 3 and MLL with AA 60fps, I find this hard to believe, did u watercooled and oc?

I can cf my 290x and watercooled for £754 total that is only £180 more than a single 780ti LOL

Hm, you said you can play 60fps stablesbut sometimes it drops to 25?

Check if there is any processes running at the background that may hinder perfomance and do a malware and virus check.

Else it may be the game, you should not feel that bad about it htough, i cannot run most of my games stable on 30fps (planetside 2 for example) i would be happy in your place, also try to OC the card if it has a third party cooler on it (Asus, Tri-x etc)

I say do a bit of tweaking on the gpu core clock and a little on the memory clock. It common to see fps drops in demanding games but generally playable. Unless you are the 60fps master race kind

lolz jk

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Sure it's not down throttling itself? They do get quite hot... Try taking the side off the case and have Msi afterburner in the background monitoring gpu clock speed and temps

it is playable just saying that I would have preferred to play on 1080p and not having all this fps drop in some 'intense' scene in the game. I really hate it, thats why I got myself a second 290x so i dont get these nasty fps drop and also  I can play at higher than 60fps. the oc on this card will only give 6-8% improve in performance coz my card already come overclocked.

What? I said except for Watch Dogs, Metro and Crysis ..... every other game runs fined

On Metro with 4xAA and everthing on max I get like 55fps

Crysis 3 on full is like 30fps :P although 30fps on crysis is very smooth and not stuttery

sorry I must have misread ur comment, MLL is unplayable though in my rig. for crysis 3 I get 60fps on ultra no AA, 2 settings on high LOL! Shame, crysis 3 is an amd title. it drops to 40 fps towards the end of the game though, but for some reason this game feels very smooth

Yeah the cryengine is SUPER stable, even at like 20 fps it is smooth, it just doesn't tear and jerk around like normal games

The cryengine actually supports nvidia and amd, in fact cryengine one was created for nvidia.

it is playable but not fun, i get like 65fps on the train track, and like 20fps out in the open. that game is sh$t anyway so I don't really care too much about it. I enjoy wolfenstein the new order more eventhough the graphics aren't that great but it is a better gameplay imo I run that game 50fps at ultra everything max out, although I get headache easily coz I came from 120hz tn panel LOL, my qnix is able to do 100hz though, so i never really take full advantage of my monitor when using a single gpu.

Not too bothered about 120hz personally, 1440p 60fps I find is a really smooth beautiful experiance

I actually liked crysis 3, but hey ho thats just me maybe

No you aren't. I wouldn't go to 1440p without SLIing my Titan.

I, too, demand 60+ at all times and like high settings ;)

Hmmm odd.  I mean Metro 2033 is a bear because it's unoptimized. That's one of the major reasons they are re-releasing it with the updated Last Light engine.

I realize I have an OC on the Lightning, but your 290X should be around the same if not better -

Very Playable for me, but not using my 96Hz monitor as much as I would like :)

Turn down the very high settings to High it would be even more playable. I am also being bottlenecked here in the grassy areas due to my 3570K.

It's actually afterburner. The newer version can also display CPU usage and temps.

Well,

I did run my single GTX780 Ti heavily overclocked with watercooling and a large custom built loop so throttling wasn´t a topic for my card at all. And I did have, for sure depending on the game, here and there massiv FPS drops in 1440p. Now with a GTX 780 Ti SLI the game has changed big time! That´s a whole new experience, and on top of that the new cards work a lot better in SLI... I can´t really feel the micro stuttering any more, so great :).

Sure thing most is playable with 1 GPU but doesn´t really satisfy me since FPS jump in some games occure from about 75 down to 25 depending on details and AA settings.

And let´s not forget this counts for 1440p @ 60Hz. Now with that being said, when the Asus RoG Swift will be released we are talking about 1440p @ 144Hz. All of you that think 1 Highend GPU can handle this (and yes I know there is Gsync coming with it for all nVidia users)... wake up that´s a dream ;) .
