Backplate for sapphire dual-x r9 280x

Midnitewarrior4

Hi im planning my first build and im most likely getting the sapphire r9 280x unless the price for the msi cards go down, and i was wondering if it would be worth putting on a backplate on the card, ( what i mean is, is it worth the effort to put on a backplate cause of the ugly blue pcb) and would it be hard to put a backplate on ?

if you need a card with backplate get the 280X Vapor-X

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Is it worth it? That's completely up to you. It has no benefit other than looking good and maybe strengthening the card a little.

In my opinion, it's worth the cost. It's not hard either, you just unscrew a few screws, position the backplate and then screw them back in. If you're in Europe, I'd suggest looking at Coldzero.eu They did my custom backplates, they're pretty cheap and can make your design to spec.

the thing is i need to keep my budget under or as close to 900$ as possible, so would it be worth the extra 50$ to get the vapor-x ? Or at that price should i just get the msi card ?

Vapor-X not only has a nice backplate

the cooler is one of the best

vapor chamber > 3 fan coolers

Not hard if you have the proper tools, it's going to void the warranty though.

will it ? And what tools would be needed ?

The stickers on the screws are what make sure you didn't disassemble it, you will need to remove them to install the backplate.

To make a custom backplate you need to decide what material are you going with (probably aluminum), you need to cut it to size, drill the mounting holes, prepare the surface, prime and paint it. You can use acrylic and less sophisticated tools, but it won't look as nice if it doesn't have the clean cuts.

Getting a custom backplate from EK or other water cooling companies also works, they sell them separately, you don't need to get the waterblock.

Custom backplates are between $20-35, and if you don't have the materials/tools making one yourself is going to be more expensive, you might be better off purchasing the Vapor-X or Tri-X model from Sapphire, which come with a backplate out of the box and have better cooling; or buying it from another brand.

it also has a custom PCB which means you have no worries when OCing

since the power delivery is much better than reference

think of it like EVGA classy

600 watts is plenty for the 280X

unless its a no brand PSU, then I worry

you can run a 290X with a 600 watt PSU provided you do not OC
