I am planning on building a router just out of a old pc. Though could i completely replace a Home Hub 5 from BT with it ?

Pending on what you plan to do, you can use pfsense and a simple 4 or 8 port switch. If you also want wifi use a wifi router for that.

Yes, you can get PCI DSL cards but most of them are not supported with PfSense. Also, if you do go the built router route, I recommend PfSense.

There's not much benefit from creating your own router. Rather there are counterbenefits including the major ones being increased power consumption and noise.

You do have a point on that, i do agree with the increased power consumption and noise.

Some of the huge benefits of building a router is being able to have your own VPN, which is quite handy if you are needing protection when you are at a coffee shop or something like that, I often use my VPN to access my school work from college, and to provide encryption on the unsecured wifi as well. Using PFSense also gives you many other options to.

Such as

  • Firewall
  • Download windows updates
  • anti-virus

those are to name a few. The windows update is a plus in my terms. Windows updates download a lot faster with them being cached on the PFSense Box. Saves a lot of time.
