Our review of the ASUS PadFone X is here. This product promises a lot – is the design too ambitious, or is it an exciting step into the future for mobile devices?

This is a review I've been waiting for. Too much screen bezel though.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

did you guys know that Asus was the pioneer of the transformer-able phone/table/laptop?

the design never fails to impress me

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I think concepts like this would be amazing if they worked as well as the standalone devices.

For me, the keyboard needs to be more like the Surface keyboard (and have an actual keyboard layout rather than the one it has now - referring to the Asus one) and the tablet needs less bezel.

It looks like a beta version of the product, so when it's actually finished I may buy into it.

That bezel is quite large...Hm. Otherwise an interesting device I suppose.

that screen bezel on the tablet really turned me off.  It's like the first gen ipad.

that bezel is huge but then again having somewhere to actually hold onto with a thumb is nice

cool idea but definitely not implemented very nicely imho. maybe the next gen or two will have this worth adapting into.

Yes, got to admit that this is some nice design. I personally am not a big fan of these devices (especially laptop/tablet hybrids), since the tend to have some serious drawbacks for my use cases, but hey, I still like them design wise...

For me, i would prefer a separate phone and tablet solution that could synchronize app states.

This is a cool idea, but i doubt it would take off. The tablet part for me seems more like an accessory

One thing I dont get about these "convergent" pieces of tech

Why are they always low end? Why cant they have an awesome high end smartphone and tablet combo?

What?

I am saying, why cant we have a phone on par with the latest flagship models slot into a tablet with the screen and build quality of a high end tablet like an iPad

Sure it wouldnt be cheap, but I wouldnt trade in my iPhone and iPad for a worse phone and worse tablet...

Why cant they have an LG G3 spec on par phone, slot into into a high end tablet dock

My dad just got the iPhone 5s and I got him a iPad air, took a while to setup but once it was all his apps, music, emails, browser history... anything he could get on his phone he has on his tablet and visa versa. Also there both usable at the same time. While probably more expensive. Only thing it cant do is swap the screen on the fly but my dad uses one or the other, I don't see moving between the two happening that often to be a concern.

Anyone got a source on the stand he used for the tablet? I'm sure he's probably mentioned it before, but I was hoping someone could just give me a quick link!

Thanks guys!

I think the name is just somewhat odd and I really can't understand how anyone would want to use an Android Tablet, but for the whole "Put the phone in the tablet" thing I guess both devices need to have the same operating system.

All the parts are here, just need to get customized cords to connect the motherboard to the front panel.
