Is my motherboard stupid or are all 3 of my hard drives stupid?

TheWall

My hard drives have been really strange lately.

So the motherboard i am using is a really cheap one that came from a pre built acer desktop, very bad, only sata 2, no usb 3, green pcb ect... And i think it might be the source of my hard drive troubles. So i have a 120GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD and 2 HDDs. None of them work properly. Both my hard drives are really really slow like a few megabytes/s and cause bluescreens constantly. My SSD behaves a bit differently, when i'm turning on my computer, opening applications ect... It's very fast and works perfectly fine. I also benchmarked it and the speeds are read speed is exactly as it should be, but my write is only at 74.06. And i just tried downloading tomb raider but it is really slow, half the time steam says disk is busy, and in task manager it says it's at about 12 mb/s and is at 100%, and my computer is super slow. So i guess there is something wrong with my write speed. Could this be my motherboard, or could all 3 hard drives be malfuctioning? or is it my power supply? It's only 500w, it's 80+ bronze but by a generic brand. And the asus psu calculator recomends 650w for my setup.

Benchmark (It's sata 2, so the read is supposed to be like that.)

Steam (I know it looks pretty fast but i usually get like 50-60, and speed tests are way higher than that.

It's worth noting that i only have like 4 gigs left on my SSD, but my other drives were never close to full

Show us a full screenshot of all processes running in task manager. Make sure you're showing all tasks from all users. Run malware scans too.

Nothing else uses more than 1 mb, most are at 0.1 or 0 and i have formatted it and it still happens

I doubt it's a motherboard problem. SSDs tend to loose performance when they're full of stuff, try freeing some space and see what happens. As for the hdds, if you've already defragmented them (which I hope you have? ;) ) I suggest you try formatting them and seeing if anything changes, otherwise they might just be about to die. Still, if you can afford it, get a new motherboard like an asus p8z68-m, it shouldn't be too expensive. As for the psu, if you needed more you'd notice it in games, the gpu is the most power hungry component in your pc.

4gb on a system drive isn't good due to swap files, this would cause your system perform badly.

It sounds to me like you're really pushing that board. I'm not sure about Acer but with most of the prebuilt makers they really are tight on specs and don't have a whole lot of headroom to do much more than they were configged for in the first place. It sounds to me that you should save your pennies and get at least a new m/bd and maybe a psu.

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!

Have 20 gb free now and same thing happening, and my hard drives are completely dead now

Then your hdds are almost certainly dead. Did you backup your data? If you didn't then your best bet is to not touch the hdds and bring them to a specialist for data recovery as soon as possible.

Either way I would try removing the hdds from the system, do a clean install of windows on your ssd and see what happens. As I said, although it's unlikely that the issue is the motherboard you should still replace it for a better one.

I didn't have anything of value on the HDDs, but what do you think is most likely the issue with the ssd? I can return it no problemo, but i dont want to send it in if the SSD is not the issue

Again I suggest you reinstall windows after formatting the ssd, if that doesn't fix it you probably strained it too much (ssds can suffer from constant load) OR the sata controller on the motherboard is toast as you previously suggested, although it's unlikely since if it had a problem it would probably just not work. Either way to troubleshoot that you need to find a friend who can lend you his pc to benchmark the ssd on his sata controller, I don't think there's a way to do it with your own pc.

Use the toshiba diagnostic tool that was included with the SSD.

Having two younger siblings I know how you feel :P

either ask your parents to force him if he's young enough or look for a friend who has a suitable pc.

He did let my try as my birthday present... Not like i was getting a real one anyway -.-. But i found out that on my pc it is not detected at all, but on his it is detected but still very broken and almost unusable, have not tried the SSD though

Hm, so as expected the hdds are as good as dead. You should just replace those, hdds aren't very expensive nowadays. As for the ssd, until you try it there's no real way to know if the problem lies in the drive or in the motherboard (or in the software, sometimes windows can do that do a drive).

Yeah i guess, but i hope it is broken because then i can send it in for a replacement and upgrade to a 250gb for fairly cheap
