Intel Pentium G3258 vs. AMD Athlon 750k: What Should I buy

Should I get the new Athlon 20th anniversary  G2358 or AMD Athlon 750k. This CPU should handle:

-Semi-heavy gaming (Payday 2, Battlefield 4, GTA V, Garry's Mod, maaaaaybe Call of Duty, Minecraft)

-Browsing

-Having a few programs open while browsing & gaming

Which is better for these kinds of things and what should I buy?

Depends, how likely are you to want to upgrade this PC down the road?

yes this too, becasue you would likely want a upgrade to brodwell and the pentium could do that but the Athlon you would need a new mobo

The Pentium. It leaves you open to upgrade to Broadwell (I don't know about Skylake), and the performance is amazing when overclocked (so be sure to get a nice cooler).

skylake is probably going to be an entirely new socket over lga 1150. He should try to buy a quad core with a compatible Z87/97 motherboard.

I'd go with the Athlon for the somewhat heavily threaded workload.  The G3258 would mostly be good for single core stuff.

of course the AMD, we have a 760K and BF4 runs with 50% usage and smooth

Really? that's pretty good, I think I'm edging towards AMD.

I  would probably upgrade every other year for the processor, then rest like the GPU and Storage every year if I need it.

Purchasing the 750K, I recieved a near-dead CPU. Then I RMA'd it, in which I recieved a CPU that was only marginally better. The 750K also runs hot. I recorded load temps of almost 75C on a Hyper 212 EVO at stock speeds.

Purchasing the G3258, it worked out of the box. And it doesn't touch 45 at load on the same EVO.

Running both chips, they perform similarly in games, with the Pentium edging out on almost every title I tested (except for Grand Theft Auto IV, where it ran with my GTX 770 at sub-30FPS while the Athlon ran it above 40.

And no, I do not have any written benchmarks, since I do not own the 750K anymore.

Well from the 750K there's no logical upgrade path, from the Pentium there's broadwell i7s.

I'd suggest Pentium + Z97.

Yeah, I see it would make a more appropriate upgrade path if I went with Z97 since Broadwell is coming next year.

Broadwell-E will be on X99, not Z97.

Unless the E was an error, either way 5770K is a nicer upgrade path:P

I'm surprised no one has linked this.

Make what you will of it. I'd personally opt for the G3258, and did in a build for a friend who wanted to put together an HTPC. He later upgraded to a 770 in it (from a 650ti), and uses it as his main PC now.

I really wish that we'd just make organic hardware already, that grows and adapts to the demands it needs to meet. That way, grannies' computers can be floppy sacks of organicness and the 12 year old Minecrafters will look like the guys that only do bicep curls, and the nerdy programmers will finally have justice, with their body-builder rigs that skipped leg day.

I would go for the 3258 since it's really overclockable and I think Linus said that he has never seen an Intel randomly dying

So now I've done some time to think about it. I have a free FM2+ board so I might as well get the 750k. However by the beginning 2015 I'll have saved up enough for a new board and Broadwell processor. :)
