Upgrading to gtx 760 concerns

Go to solution Solved by Thony,

How about Q8400 or Q8400s ? is this a better solution than overclocking my current cpu also maybe i can overclock that one to 3 ghz

Q8400 is minimum requirement for watchdogs that means it is capable of running the game at lowest settings.

Q8400 can get to 3.0ghz, dont know what air cooler could achieve that since I dont know the chips heat output when reaching 3.0ghz but you can easily google it out as many people OCed it to that level.

Intel Core 2 Quad chips are stupidly close to i5 prices btw and i5s are lot more powerful and up to date. But that would require to really build new PC...

So i decided to upgrade to a gtx 760 from a gts 450 and im not sure if my psu will handle the new 760
i have a 500W psu and my rig is

Gigabyte G41MT-S2PT motherboard with a
Intel® Core2 Quad CPU    Q8200  @ 2.33GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz cpu and
4096MB DRR3 RAM

Help me please Thnak you !

Well that went somewhere else quickly

It should be fine, but that Q8200 is going to bottle neck that 760 to the ground. my 750ti is bottlenecked by a Q8300 which sure it can handle games but some games are just a laggy mess at times.

like bf4 I get 30 fps on low at 1080p and 720p.

Watch dogs i get 20fps even at 800x600 is won't go above 20fps because my processor is slow

Seriously i was thinking about upgrading my gpu first so i can play games like watch dogs smoothly and then upgrade the rest of the main components when i have the money but why will it bottleneck it so hard is there a main reason like the speed maybe ill just overclock ?

If you can I would seriously think about overclocking your processor to around 3.0ghz. it'll lower the bottleneck. to a reasonably playable point. but Q8200 isn't even in minimum spec requirements for watch dogs (q8400) is the lowest I think so you should overclock.

most games would only get a little bottleneck which should be fine but other will be fine.

I did same thing as you are going to do.

I had Q8300 and put GTX 760 in there. Originaly I had GT310 so it was great improvement but I noticed that I was not getting much out of it as I expected to. Benchmarks were pretty low like half the value others were getting with proper rig. So your CPU will bottleneck the card even if u overclock. It will improve in FPS but I dont know how much, definately not to the full potential of 760 thought.

Watch Dogs is not well optimized and still runs like poo even after 2 months since its been released... I am running watchdogs on High settings (water ultra, gpu buffered frames 3, 8x MSAA, no blur) with the new rig and I can feel that sometimes its not smooth. Far Cry 3 and Bioshock Infinite run totally fine :)
