Maxed out Dual CPU Workstation/4k gaming. Wall of Text.

meikat
Sorry for wall of text!  :P

I want to preface this post with a few things. This build is not for me.  I'm a rather experienced PC builder (I've built probably 50+ computers in the last 15 years, some of them very high end and heavily modded), but I'm a bit rusty as I have only been building basic midrange gaming systems for myself the past few years.

This build will be for someone who uses their computer between 4-16 hours a day.  They are a gamer, but they are also a profession who works heavily with 3d applications and wants a rig that will handle literally anything he throws at it for the next 3 years+, and YES he works with 8+ applications like Maya, 3dmax, photoshop, zbrush, etc all open at the same time.  He has the money in hand to build this, and it's not some dream or thought experiment.

1. Budget & Location:  Lets just say, unlimited ($25-30K USD is his budget, and he wants to spend all of it.  It's a use it or lose it scenario).  Florida, USA.

2. Aim:  Gaming, heavy professional 3d game design, 3d printing design, general entertainment, and making jaws drop when someone sees it.

3. Monitors: we were planning on running 3 of the ASUS PB287Q in a panoramic setup, and possibly hooking to a 85" tv occaisionally (already owned, not in budget)

4. Peripherals: We dont need to include these.  He has most of the peripherals he wants or has picked out new ones.

5. He is upgrading because both his Alienware Desktop and Laptop have been giving him grief and he has discovered custom PCs.  He ordered and received a cross desk, and is anxious to fill it.

Here is the build so far with justifications:

Mobo: Asus Z9PE-D8

Best "pretty" dual CPU board I could find.

CPU: 2x Xeon E-5-2697V2

For 3d Design work and rendering, more cores=faster renders.  He will not compromise on this and go for an i7.  Please don't suggest an i7 unless you have better arguements than a minor increase in performance in games.  This is a workstation AND gaming machine.

GPU: 2x Titan Z

We were sold on the Radeon, but then we saw Linus' wonderful review on the ASUS PB287Q and decided to grab the titan as it has more VRAM.  Also, he owns an Nvidia Shield, and loves Physx effects.  He also has interest in using Gsync.

Memory: 8x CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 8GB DDR3 1866  Model: CMT32GX3M4X1866C9 (two of the 32gb kits.)

Has removable heat sinks and optional watercooling blocks available. Also is listed as supported memory by Asus for the Motherboard.

SSD: 8x Intel 730 Series 480GB in Raid 10.

Tons of space, speed, and redundancy in case of failure, he wont have downtime.

HDD: 4x Seagate ST4000VN000 4TB in Raid 10.

More space for storage and backup of essential projects and entire system backups.

Raid card: Areca ARC-1882IX-12NC

I don't trust the onboard raid card to handle what I'm throwing at it. :)

Sound card: Asus Xonar?

Open to suggestions here.  I want something that looks nice since the case is very open.

Cooling: Open to suggestions on fans. I have a few in mind, but I haven't researched them heavily.  We will be watercooling, but we'll be ordering those parts after we bench test the system.

He already bought this.  He was a backer for their crowdsourced fundraiser so he got the kit with every accessory included.

Power Supply: 2x Corsair AX1500

Chose this based on recommendations here.  After looking in to it, seems like a solid pick.  Thanks! :)

If you made it down here, thanks for reading everything!  Feel free to ask any questions or make suggestions (as long as it isn't telling him that he's stupid for going so overkill).

7/17 Edit:  Changed power supply thanks to recommendations.  Still looking for input on sound card and raid card.

I was planning on doing a build log for it for sure! :)  We have the cross desk assemble already and just waiting for it's guts. I've been lurking here for a while, but I decided to join up and post for this epic build.

jaw_dropping_butch.jpg-> My reaction when I see the part list and think about the price

For the PSU, I suggest a beast PSU for 2 Titan Zs, a semi-beast PSU for everthing else, like EVGA Supernova 1600 G2 (1600W) for GPUs and Corsair AX1200 for the rest

My current rig for entertainment/gaming: i5 4570 3,2GHz; MSI B85M-E45; ZOTAC GTX760 AMP!; 8GB (2x4GB) by Kingston; Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm; Corsair 200R, Corsair VS650; Dell U2312HM, Samsung DVD R/W optical drive; CM Devastator; Corsair MM400 gaming pad

AX1500i for the power supplies. Both of them.

All the other specs sound great. Maybe consider some higher frequency memory, such as 2400MHz.

Are you building a custom loop for this thing?

If not, get a pair of H105 to cool the CPUs (as long as they fit in the desk)

No offence but if you spend $25,000 on a PC, you're a god dam idiot.

In 5 years all that technology will be practically worthless.

Spend $5,000 , spend the rest on your house, family, vacation, or something.

He literally has everything he wants in terms of those things, and he is not directly paying for it.  All of this is covered in the original post.

Edit:  Also saying "No offence" does not make it ok to call someone an idiot. Lets try to keep this positive please.

I thought about that, but then we'd pretty much fill all the slots because they are dual slot cards and we'd have no raid card or sound card. :(

Yeah we're gonna build a custom loop for the watercooling.  We're thinking about the EK blocks for the Titan Z (they're pretty).  I can't remember the CPU block off hand.  I know there was one he liked with an LED on it and seeing as the Xeons are multiplier locked, they shouldn't get too hot.  I have most of the water cooling stuff saved on my laptop so I don't have it easily accessible right now.

Poor (not as in money) idiot, buying titan Zs.  They're gonna be old news in a year

Even though this is probably a troll since there has been so many of these threads
