Depends on your room really, I find 5.1 easier to set up and still gives great effect. Also more things support it

Oh forgot to say that, will hire a contractor to set it up since the walls is kinda weird and broken  Btw does more things support 5.1 than 7.1?

Ok thanks for the help guys, but what happens if the thing doesn't support 7.1, will it only use 5 of the speakers?

yesh, it will be great,  having good sound is what makes a film great. (also I think the first thing you should do when you get it, is turn the volume up really high and watch the bankrobbery from the film "heat", BEST SOUND EVER)

I agree. With a room that size, 5.1 is probably your best bet because you won't be able to place speakers for a 7.1 properly.

5.1 is good

7.1 would be overkill for your room unless you really want it.

why not 5.2 or 7.2 ? :P

Unless you have small room then .1 should be enough :P

Unless they have a big room, that's likely to WAY OVERPOWER the bass. Much easier to Add a second base in parallel (or if the receiver has a second bass output) later, if he still feels the bass isn't powerful enough. Honestly some people are just way too obsessed with bass :P

Ok thanks for the help guys, but what happens if the thing doesn't support 7.1, will it only use 5 of the speakers?

Using a 7.1 speaker setup with a 5.1 audio source will (if your receiver is set up right) duplicate one of the speaker channels on the extra 2 speakers. You will still hear the sound from them.

Most movies still use 5.1 audio Dawn of the planet of the apes for example. (unless they use some Imax magic)

I disagree. Getting a better 5.1 setup for the same price will most definitely equate to a better audio experience.

If the OP has a huge room and a budget to match it, THEN 7.1 starts to make sense, but for the average home, 5.1 is perfect.
