Asus ROG G550JK vs Lenovo Y50

xXButchXx

Alright, I'm in a little bit of a pickle. I'm deciding between these two laptops (Y50 and G550JK) as my next gaming notebook. From what I've seen on the internet, it's the better GPU of the Y50 (GTX 860m) but the crappy display of the Y50 against the mediocre GPU of the G550JK (GTX 850m) and a great display. The storage solution doesn't matter because I have a 500gb Samsung 840 evo lying around that I can put into it. So far I'm leaning towards the G550JK because apparently you can overclock the GPU pretty easily on it to be at the same level as the GTX 860, however it's still GDDR3 memory on it. What do you guys think? Which one should I pick?

try eating your way out.

edit: what is more important to you? A nice screen or better GPU? Buy the one that fills your needs. Only you know what you want.

I should be studying.

Thanks, I really can't decide. If only I could put the G550 display on the Y50....

How graphically demanding are the games you want to play on it? BTW, I don't know how good an idea it is to oc on a laptop that might have some heat issues due to being so thin.

I want play titanfall and bf4 on decent settings. And asus's GPU tweak is actually good for overclocking and unless you crank up the oc it should be fine cooling wise (I got this info from the newegg tv overview of it).

Well, your call, I suppose. Anyway, the performance difference would still be there, because theoretically you could overclock the 860M just as well.

Personally, having used plenty of laptops before, I'm fine with the TN panel that gets used so often. I wouldn't choose it over stronger hardware, but that's just me. 'Better panel' vs 'Better hardware' is a pretty subjective decision, and only you can answer it, really. Unless there's something else in the specs that stands out?

Not really, but the build quality on the Asus seems better.

I ordered the G550JK two days after I posted this thread. I have it now and love it! I would definitely recommend it :) although it doesn't have the graphical horsepower that the y50 does.
