good free video editing software?

whats a good free video editing software?

looking to splice different bits of video together, sound overlay (recording video and getting an outside sound source of whats actually happening in the vid and syncing it up all nice so it doesn't look like a dubbed old kung fu movie), maybe some text or slides overlay...

preferably for windows, if there's a really good one for linux I can prolly do that.  If linux, which distro should I use with it?

Thanks

I use Windows Movie Maker. I just asked my film school friend...he said lightworks is free but hasn't tried it yet. He uses paid programs.

They have a free version. I used it for a while before going to Vegas.

I've tried both of those.  windows movie maker is a bit clunky and I can't really figure out how to use lightworks... I watched some tutorials, but different things happen for me when I do the same exact thing...

Try the search function There's heaps of info around.

Cineform is a good starting platform to work with. Then you can move onto adobe premier pro and after effects ect.
