News Items 850 Pro

Source 1: anandtech.com

- 850 Pro Specs: Clicky (Anandtech: Also available in Source 1)

- First SSD with 3D NAND (V-NAND)

- Traditionally NAND and other semiconductors are scaled horizontally along the X and Y axes but due to the laws of physics, there is a limit of how small the transistors can be made. To solve the problem, 3D NAND introduces a Z-axis i.e. a vertical dimension.

- Samsung is able to relax the process node back to a much more convenient 40nm, there is no need for a 10nm-class node. (A higher process node provides more endurance and higher performance.)

- (Fundamentally the) only change in the 850 Pro is the switch to V-NAND, the same controller and (6GBPS SATA) interface is used.

- The firmware has gone through a massive overhaul to adopt the characteristics of V-NAND (shorter read, program and erase latencies and higher endurance).

- Endurance rated at 150TB. (Samsung said that they have a 128GB 850 Pro in their internal testing with over eight petabytes)

- 32-layer V-NAND comes in at 10.75GB (As opposed to power of two such as 128GB).

- SSD Price comparison including 850: Clicky (Anandtech)

- Tesla says it hopes to launch the cheaper Model E sometime in 2016.

- Model X (SUV) set to launch in the second quarter of 2015.

Crytek UK’s Staff no longer going to work

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: TopWargamer

- Employees at Crytek UK, are hoping that Deep Silver will purchase the studio and continue funding development of Homefront: The Revolution.

25/50 Gigabit Ethernet

Source 1: zdnet.com

Link 1: 25gethernet.org (Consortium page)

- Arista Networks, Broadcom, Google, Mellanox Technologies and Microsoft, have formed a consortium to push ahead with creating specifications for both 25 Gigabit Ethernet and 50 Gigabit Ethernet.

- The aim of the consortium is to create standards for both 25 Gigabit Ethernet and 50 Gigabit Ethernet, which are necessary in order to convert speed into systems.

- Plans to create official IEEE specifications stalled at a meeting last March, due to a perceived lack of support.

- The consortium announced the "royalty-free availability of initial specifications for both a single-lane 25-Gbps Ethernet and dual-lane 50-Gbps Ethernet link protocol".

- It aims to “support Ethernet-based transmission between server network interface controllers (NICs) and top-of-rack (ToR) switches [..] covering Ethernet physical layer (PHY) and media access control layer (MAC) behavior, including virtual lane alignment, auto negotiation, and forward error correction characteristics.”

- Specifications published by the consortium "maximize the radix and bandwidth flexibility of the data center network while leveraging many of the same fundamental technologies and behaviors already defined by the IEEE 802.3 standard."

- The consortium members predict that technology based on these standards could hit the market within the next 12 to 18 months.

EFF’s letter to the NSA

Source 1: eff.org

- “the NSA is scrutinizing people who visit websites such as the Tor Project’s home page and even Linux Journal” http://www.linuxjournal.com/

- “NSA is adding "fingerprints" to activities that go hand in hand with First Amendment protected activities and freedom of expression across the globe.”

- Articles, based on an in-depth investigation, reveal XKeyscore source code that demonstrates how the NSA’s system works.

- Xkeyscore is a tool which the NSA uses to sift through the vast amounts of data it obtains.

- According to the Guardian, XKeyscore’s deep packet inspection software is run on collection sites all around the world, ingesting one or two billion records a day.

- This fingerprint identifies users searching for the TAILs (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) software program, viewing documents relating to TAILs, or viewing websites that detail TAILs.

- Tails is a live operating system that allows a user to leave no trace on the computer they are using, useful for people communicating on computers that they don’t trust, such as the terminals in Internet cafes.

- NSA’s code suggest that the NSA thinks Linux Journal (a monthly magazine for enthusiasts of Tails) is an "extremist forum," where people advocate for Tails.

- Here’s the bottom line (from EFF): If you’re using Tor or Tails, there is a possibility that you will be subject to greater NSA scrutiny. But the EFF believes that the benefits outweigh the burdens.

Microsoft and Canon make a patent licensing agreement

Source 1: cnet.com

- Instead of suing for patent infringement, MS and Canon have decided to just share the intellectual property.

- The two companies announced Wednesday that they've signed a patent cross-licensing agreement, which gives them the right to use the intellectual property on some of each other's products.

- Microsoft IP Licensing general manager Nick Psyhogeos said: "Microsoft believes cooperative licensing is an effective way to accelerate innovation while reducing patent disputes."

Windows 9 Preview

Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: GoodBytes

Source 2: zdnet.com

- Microsoft’s goal is to make Windows 9 “more palatable to hold-out Windows 7 users”.

- Microsoft is working on new features specifically aimed at "desktop" users, those who interact primarily with Windows from a desktop or laptop PC with mouse/keyboard and optional touch.

- According to zdnet’s sources, Microsoft will continue in this vein with Windows Threshold. The Threshold OS will look and work differently based on hardware type.

- Two-in-one devices, like the Lenovo Yoga or Surface Pro, will support switching between the Metro-Style mode and the Windowed mode, based on whether or not keyboards are connected or disconnected.

- The Desktop/laptop SKU of Threshold will include, as previously rumored, the Mini-Start menu — a new version of the traditional Microsoft Start menu.

- Microsoft is expected to deliver a public preview of the Threshold release, most likely in the fall of 2014.

- The Microsoft OS team is hoping to get as many Windows 7 users moved to Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows 8 users to Windows 8.1 Update in preparation for (hopefully) getting them to move to Threshold once it is out.

- Windows Threshold is looking like it could be free to all Windows 8.1 Update, and maybe even Windows 7 Service Pack 1, users.

That Windows 9 news is exactly what I want to hear about that platform. I want to like Windows 8, but the arbitrary way Microsoft went about forcing something that was alien on consumers without giving us a "classic mode" so to speak really irritated me. Windows 9 sounds like it will be exactly what I was hoping 8.1 would be...

@LinusTech@Slick

Of course I don't really know how multiple nationalities work in north America.

But.

Having been born in the Netherlands, and having a Dutch father but a Belgian mother. Does not make me half of any of the two. It makes me 100% Dutch and Belgian.

I have both passports, and I can freely choose to live and work where ever I want in those two countries. Without any of the hassle with visas or anything like that.

I was pretty happy about hearing about the i7 5820k being 6 cores :D. Hopefully they will keep the price low. I wanna go x99 but I should probably wait till broadwell-e as ivybridge core performance vs haswell-e isn't huge. But 6 cores = yes pls.

Maybe Samsung is trying to compete with SanDisk's Extreme Pro It also has a 10 Year Warranty. >Reference

Sadly we don't see demos too often because it statistically it reduces sales, at least from what they have said.

I actually like the WAN shows that have character to them. Keep Messing up xD. The most memorable wan show that I have watched is the one where luke and the team were gone @ CES, and you had to voice the intro. "Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo"

My Gaming Bio thingy?  Anyhow I love co-op gaming so add me.   :) Skype/Origin/Uplay/Steam/Other -> "GuestForeverX"

Linus, would it be possible to have some small changes to the WAN Show formula so it can be used as a podcast? I really like following it, but I'd prefer listening to it while doing other stuff, rather than stay 1.5h+ to watch it on the PC.

Just thought I'd say this since you mentioned the person who didn't end up enjoying the clothing enough to keep up with the subscription. I was really skeptical. I don't have a lot of money, but I just recieved my second month's package of clothing (plus that little added bonus they seem to throw in), and I'm satisfied. I just graduated highschool. I'm not amazingly in shape nor amazingly out of it. I've grown accustomed wearing just jeans and t-shirts, never really nicer shirts and never shorts in public besides swim trunks and gym shorts when needed. This was mostly out of no motivation to shop for clothing/ I didn't really care. I saw this, saw the 15$ off and took it. First month was okay, got some shirts, shorts and a pair of glasses. And this month was a bunch of shirts and a travel kit. Now my life hasn't changed for the better or anything dramatic like that, but I get compliments on my look now and I really like the way I look in these clothes. The quality is great and they are really comfortable clothes to wear. I picked up some nicer looking shoes and when I look in my mirror with the whole outfit it looks like I could have spent good time and money in a mall shopping for clothes. If nothing else, I am damn impressed with being able to look good without trying. Five Four has my approval as of now and I am happy to see what month three can provide. So if you're wondering about it and you sound similar to me, try it, you might like it after all. I did.

*Edit: I feel I should mention, I didn't really have to change my conservative look. I managed to stay conservative with no flambouyant colours and just look (IMO) better with it. Also, my girlfriend enjoys it so there's that.

I sometimes fell people in NA are missing a beat when it comes to pirating.

I live in europe, and most companies set game prices day 1 at the same figure even if its a different currency so since we use euros and not $US games end up costing 75-90$, standard editions on steam and origin style, not delux or with w/e extras. But you see this in other places, even more extreme like australia.

Now lets add this situation, since i moved a bit around, not much but i have, and know this.

If you live in Western Europe, just like US or Canada, roughly 2000$US income/month is average so even at 75$ a games its ehh... ok.

Now lets look elsewhere. Going estwards in Europe you see an average of 500$ /month. This is also a very optimistic view on average income for Asia, Africa and South America where 80% of the worlds population is.

Now please explain how you can expect someone to pay a sixth of they monthly income on a game? The equivalent is for games in US and Canada to cost 400$. would you pay that? seriously? would you? i certainly wouldn't!

so the next time you bring up this subject, or complain they only buy it when its 2$ on steam, or say something like -75% -80% steam sales are getting repetitive, bare in mind thats the only time most will even consider buying games.

You want to see a big drop in pirating? Its easy. Stop asking most people to skip paying rent or bills if they wana buy your game!

If you have twitch mobile you can choose to listen to the stream like a live podcast. I don't know about if it's not live though.
