Lighting It Up: Ambient Backlighting Done Right! (A Anthrax 7.0 Sub-Log)

TDctUWa.png

I made this thread because these updates are part of my Anthrax 7.0 Build Log but go much farther into detail than whats needed from a update that doesnt directly apply to the build. I do however think that this is great info and something that everyone should do if they work in dim, dark, or no lighting.

If there is something you want to know about that I didnt cover or cover enough or something you think I should add in please let me know. I read all input and try to answer all questions as best I can.

Here is the process I went through to add back lighting to the ASUS PA279Q I had recently received. The backlight strips are the Antec soundscience Halo 6 LED ones. I choose to use that generic rosewill 4 port 2 amp, 0.5 amp per port, adapter because those strips are designed to work off of a USB 2.0 PC port which max spec is 500 ma. This matches the output of the adapter and allows me to not have to take up a billion usb ports on my PC. The foot switch is just one of the generic christmas tree switches mounted to a cut off of a 2x4 with some double sided sticky tape and staples. There is also some Egrips on the bottom so it doesnt slide around. Lastly one of the most important things I did was use my own double sticky tape on the strips not the useless stuff it comes with. I went with the 3M exterior mounting tape which is way way better than that white crap that flakes off after a couple months and is actually easier to remove with less residue.

Na thats ok. Isnt the whole point to have you scroll through them and look at them? Also there will be links at the top going to the respective updates. This will apply more once I get more updates up.

Why did you do 4 separate light strips  instead of just one continuous?

Mainly because that product is only as long as I showed. They also say only one strip is needed up to a 23in monitor. I found for 23in 1080p and 24in 1200p screens I needed two strips. Two was not enough for a 27in 1440p screen. Three would have been fine but fitting the third would have bee really awkward with how the stand is so I decided to shorten two of the strips a bit.

They do offer a HDTV one but I have no idea how I would have make that go around the monitor clearly really. I do have one of them on my TV though, now that I think of it I might have 2 which is complete overkill on a 40in TV.

Why aren't there any pictures of it turned around with an image showing in the dark?

Theyll be coming in future updates. There are more monitors that need backlighting applied/reapplied first. I already have all of the pictures taken I just need top find time to put them up.

Some of you were looking for how these looked in use, so here you are! All the shots are taken with the exact same settings on the camera to best show you the effect.

I happened to have a cool idea when I saw how cheap the the LED Christmas lights were this year. Please tell me what you think. I know it doesnt looks special underneath but it really add a nice bit more of ambiance. Also now for the most part when I need to plug or un-plug a cable, or something, there is no need to get a flashlight or headlamp.

Applied the backlighting to my PB278Q using the same method that I started on the PA279Q. I also included a pic of the first layout I tried for the 4 monitors.

Sub-Update #4: Cleaning it up. | Set-Update #067

Here are some pic's I took of the process of updating the backlighting on my PA248Q. Its the same process as the others but since its only a 24in I only gave it 2 LED strips. I choose to redo it because what I did on the PA279Q was just so much better. I used to have the strips on the square part more toward the inside. Putting them farther out is better as the light is projected farther from the monitor. I choose to put them as far out as I could without putting them on the ventilation holes.
