i compared both  on the specs other then the sata express and M2 is there really a diffrence?

z97 supports devils canyon and presumably broadwell, although both should be doable with a bios update on the z87. 

 

I personally had the same choice and opted to save the money and go with the z87 as I didn't care about M.2, or the devils canyon/broadwell as DC (4690k) is really the same as the 4670k and broadwell (5760k) will likely be <5% better than the 4670k...i.e. an irrelevant upgrade anyway.

I'd just go with the Z97 for more future storage options and slightly longer support

Z97 will support Broadwell CPU in the future while Z87 will not. Other than that ~ only SATA EXPRESS, M.2 SSD slots and wider range of natively supported RAM are the only benefit of Z97 chipset motherboard.

No reason to purposely buy something outdated.  Newer chipset allows for better future upgrades.

but lets be honest....if you have a haswell chip theres no reason to upgrade to a broadwell chip, as its pretty much guaranteed to be within 5% of the performance.

Respectfully speaking... both boards have SATA and Black PCB's. What is your point?
