I haven't tried it, but I tried the LCD-X and holy fuck it's amazing. The earpads are so thick, but the headphones themselves are real heavy, well at least compared to the Sennheiser HD 800 I also tried.

Why spend 1000 dollars on headphones

Sometimes, it's just to hear that little bit better clarity, soundstage, timbre, whatever. Yes, beyond a certain price point, the law of diminishing returns rears its ugly head, but some are willing to pay that much more for the little extra. Before starting on this audio journey, I couldn't fathom why some are willing to throw money into expensive cans, but as I began to play with 'better' (and, thusly, more expensive) cans, I began to understand this philosophy.....I'll leave this pic as a cautionary 'tale'.

I'm hoping that I've finally sated this buying spree I'd been on recently......keeping my fingers crossed. ^_^

As someone who owns the HD800s, these are really good! However when it comes to sound quality the HD800s take the cake, they are better but does't mean the LCD-2s are bad and sound difference comes down to the user.

In the world of high end audio there really isn't "better", there is only different.   There's to much subjectivity in it for anything to be "better".

They may sound better to you, but others may not think so.

Had to give these up due to weight problems :(

They were beautiful and great sounding but couldn't wear them for more than 40 minutes.

I cant wait for the EL-8s, they seem to solve my problem.

I sold mine too, got HD800 after and loved them, but sold those for PC upgrades & k712, which actually sounds almost identical and costs SO much less.

I agree, that's why I have these cans, they're different enough for me, for different kinds of music and moods. Just like the HD800 isn't necessarily 'better' than the K812 or LCD2, or even the Alpha Dog. In fact, when I put on my Alpha Dog, I find myself enjoying the music I play, I find myself NOT listening to the sound but the song. When I put on my pricier cans, I find myself listening to the strumming of the guitars, the voice of the singer, the tonality, clarity, the quality of the bass and so forth. I had to remind myself NOT to dwell on these but to simply enjoy the music.

With the Lyr, I'm into tube rolling, and I was quite surprised that going from the stock GE tubes on the Lyr to a Telefunken ECC88 6DJ8, the harshness in the voice of a female singer I listen to regularly had smoothened out. I had initially thought that the Lyr + Fostex HPA4 + HD800/K812 were so good that this coarseness was supposed to be so, but listening to the same singer on the Micro iDSD, I didn't hear this coarseness in the singer's voice. I was pretty surprised that I could actually pick up on it, hence I'll be getting some Amperex and Mullards.....and another set of this Telefunken ones.

BTW, Lays, did you do a review of the K712?

What are you talking about, I'm always right and when our opinions don't line up, you're wrong.

You should consider HE-560, it sounds similiar to LCD-X

I don't know if anyone is aware of this, but recently, Audeze was lambasted for wanting to charge 800USD to replace any spoilt LCD3 (not sure about price of LCD2) drivers (they would replace both, not only one), and it was said that they were aware that some of their drivers had short self life of 3 to 4 years (NOT all drivers, just some batches I believe). Anyway, their intended move stirred a hornets' nest and the hoopla raised over it caused Audeze to back down. They have since offered to replace LCD3 and LCD2 drivers (different rates of course) at reduced cost.....much reduced cost actually. Of course, the conspiracy theorist in me suspected this reduced cost was what Audeze had wanted to charge in the first place, but chose to announce an exorbitant rate first so that when they 'caved' and announced the reduced rates, it would be welcomed with open arms.

One thing to note when buying cans, whether used or brand new, is the level of support......local customer support especially. AKG is sold by a local chain of headphones and head gear stores. There is a local distributor and they have a service center here, which unfortunately for me, is pretty far from where I am. I asked the stores whether they had replacement AKG screw on adapters and they did not, but sold good quality generic adapters like an Audio Technica one they'd recommended. I'd really wanted an AKG one since mine was MIA.

I decided to call the distributor and asked about a replacement, I was willing to pay for it, and do a bank transfer if they could send it to me via post. The staff, on hearing about my lost adapter, immediately offered to send a replacement via post without any charge at all, not even for postage! I can't tell you how pleased I am with the level of service extended by the staff...I foresee another AKG can in my future! ;)  Below is a pic of the adapter, yes, it doesn't cost much but the local distributor's excellent service has won me over, so definitely I'd be looking at getting another AKG can.
