The 2014 Razer Blade

Swndlr

I am finally able to say that I am a proud owner of a Razer Blade! From more than months ago I really liked the concept of the Blade, a thin, sleek gaming notebook. It was something that was never really accomplished before by any mafufaturer and now almost all of the top-dog producers are creating thinner and more powerful machines. I can rightfully say that the Blade is living up to my expectations quite well. It is everything that everyone has said it is. The Blade is sleek, fast, simple to setup, and lets no forget powerful. I have been using it for almost a full day and I love it. For productivity and getting work done, it works great. Right out of the box I noticed one thing, ALL ZE SMUDGES. Yes people it smudges real damn fast. Its not that bad mainly due to the black aluminum chassis but still smudges are smudges. This however doesn't take away from the intended experience of the laptop. It ran multiple games very smoothly at reasonable settings. I played Titanfall, League of Legends, and CSGO without an issue and it was an enjoyable experience. Only downsides are the battery life (somewhat, its not all that bad tbh), the cost (I got 256Gb), and the heat, which isn't that bad but I would like to see Razer work on their thermals before they roll out with the next generation Blades in the next year or so.

Pictures to come soon maybe idk. :P

I would prefer a Blade Pro...

15.6" is way too small for my liking. 17.3" is ok. 18.4" would be best though, and have thinner bezels.

But congrats on your new notebook :D

18.4" you might as well just carry an MITX system around... but back to the OP's Blade congrats personally not a fan of it but hey if you are great!

I need to travel to classes with it so I figured as much as getting the 14 inch model would suit me best. Im really satisfied with the size. Fits in my lap nicely :D

The Blade Pro is a 17.3" notebook that has bezels over 1 inch thick. If you made the bezels smaller you could fit an 18.4" screen there no problem without increasing the size of the notebook.

The new 2014 model at computex has the thermals on the other side of the case so rather than having the heat go out from under the wasd side it goes out from the numpad side but I think that is going to be a problem when the ultimate version comes out with the touch screen mod get hot and crack me thinks :/ but if it does my words will be "Goodnight Sweet Prince" *Cries*

Just curious, what FPS do you get on League of Legends? For settings both native and at 1080p, with highest settings. Thanks!

I wish I could afford one. I love the aesthetic, reminded me of the Vodoo Envy and HP Envy line which I use to love. Sadly they overheat like crazy and I just couldn't stand spending 1.4k every two years any more.

@Swndlr Good to hear from an actual owner of the machine. Linus has received one and is going to release a review soon.

The only thing that bugged me was the "Razer should work on their thermals". It is easy to say, but doing this in such a form factor is almost impossible. If you've ever seen one of these bad boys under the hood, you'd know how cooling in them looks. Compare that to lets say a desktop GPU like a GTX 760 (which has around the same TDP as both CPU and GPU on the laptop). The cooler on the desktop card is massive compared to the cooling solution in any slim notebook.

When I saw the specs of the Razer Blade 14 I said to myself "yeah great GPU, but its gonna throttle so much and hit its T-junction basically immediately". I am already impressed by how well it performs from what I heard about it.

Funny you might ask since I recently wanted to try this on my retina MacBook Pro 13", but under OS X, the V-Sync can't be disabled somehow even though you deselect V-Sync...

it fairs very well in games that allow you to scale down to something like 1080p but in games where you cant you have to scale settings down to get good frame rates but all dem pixels make up for it anyway i guess :P but gosh it annoys me when i cant scale the game down to 1080p :c makes the laptop work harder

and

about the thermals, it might just be that ive never had a gaming notebook before so im not really used to how hot something like this is SUPPOSED to get. i understand how hard it is to even keep it as cool as it is with this model while under heavy gaming loads, let alone i havent even gotten a cooling pad yet cuz im that lazy :/

Nice to hear some reviews about this machine from people who have taken the plunge :) Sadly it is not available where I live so I can't get one myself :(

Oh and btw: Personally if I where going to scale it down I would scale it down to 1600*900 since that is exactly 1/4 of the resolution which means that the pixels aren't overlapping ;) Just makes the image sharper in this case with less blurriness.

in certain games you cant scale it down. in bioshock infinite i tried scaling it down to 1080p or 1600x900 and there would be a huge black strip and when i went to 1600x900 there was a small box in the middle of the screen, not a scaled down quality but a scaled down size which was annoying because i had to scale the settings back. i wish razer had just put a 1080p screen or something less the 3200x1800 :P

I can play games at 720p and then upscale on my 13" retina MacBook Pro (which is exactly 1/4 of the display's res)... Not sure why it wouldn't let you do that.
