Do h87 and h97 motherboards support crossfire and sli?

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

those chipset ''partially'' support crossfire, that's it...not SLI...and they support crossfire at 4x speed only...so it's not suitable unless you go with two low end AMD GPU...so overall NO they don,t support multi-GPU.

For SLI you need two X8 slots otherwise it won't work at all and same goes for high-end AMD GPU they will work at 4x speed but you will loose a lot of the performance because of bandwith limitation.

So if you aim for anything more than say R9 270 crossfire, you need a Z87/Z97 board...and if your intention is two go with crossfire of such gpu's then think again there's a ton of better options out there!

I know z87 and z97 boards support crossfire and sli, but I read a few conflicting things concerning whether or not h87 and h97 boards support crossfire and sli.  So... is it possible to run multi-gpu configurations on h87 or h97 motherboards?

Just crossfire x2. No SLI. That requires 2 x8 pci-e slots and H chipsets don't have the lanes.

Different mother boards have crossfire or non crossfire but i have not seen one that supports sli, but as far as i know you could use a h87 cpu on a z97 mobo

H87 and H97 doesn't have support for SLI. Some might have support for crossfire.

On H97 in the since of some of the boards supporting both Crossire and SLI, then yeah no.

is it possible to run multi-gpu configurations on h87 or h97 motherboards?

I was responding to this, Which is true, two of the MSI H97 boards support Crossfire, So in other words, no I have not been living under a rock ;)

H87 = Z87 - Overclockability

it has the same lanes. if its certified for CFX or SLI, then it supports it! end of debate

There are some H87 that DO sopport both, however some others don't. H97 does support it, but check the mobo before you buy it please.

basically any board that has 2 8x slots supports crossfire for a board to support sli it doesnt matter the chipset its the board partner needs to pay a licensing fee from nvidia which is why not all boards have sli support.

It doesn't. 2nd slot is x4 and SLI doesnt work on x4

No 2x x8 is exclusive to z87.

so what I'm understanding is while crossfire is possible on h97 and h87, it isn't a good idea because the second slot is only x4?

I've already said this once, but it seems debated. I'll reiterate.

You need 2 x8 pci-e slots for SLI. There are no H boards that I know of which have that. They always go to x4 when you install a second pci-e extension.

This is, however, enough for crossfire and there shouldn't be any bottleneck given the bandwidth available and the crossfire model.

Hence, my original post...

So you guys are saying that a reasonable h97 mobo can handle 2 r9 270x's in crossfire ? Is it worth going for it ?
