The Pursuit of Happiness.

Lycr

Greetings ladies and gentlemen, I've had this computer for a year as of February 2013, when I got her, the original budget was around $1200 AU, I wasn't confident enough building, or picking the parts out myself, so I had a friend do it.

Here she was when she was first put together:

Of course, I like to tinker with things, so I mess around, and the guts looked a little like this:

At the time of the photo, the specs were:

i5 2500k @ 4.5GHz (Asus OC Tuner special)

Asus P8 Z68V-LX

Corsair TX650 V2

Corsair H80

Corsair Vengeance RAM, 16GB

Gigabyte 6870 OC edition

1TB Barracuda HDD

Alas, in the pursuit of perfection, I have replaced most of the parts, and she stands proud today.

Disregard the red sata cable, it's no longer there.

Current specs:

NZXT Phantom 820 in matte black

i7 3770k @ 4.2GHz (1.1V @ mid 50's Celsius)

Asus Sabertooth Z77

Corsair H100

MSI GTX660TI Power Edition

Corsair Vengeance 12GB (Gave a stick to a friend)

Corsair AX860i

Intel 330 series 120GB SSD

3 x 2TB Western Digital Greens in Raid 5

oh, and Corsair's green sleeved psu cables

I don't quite know what's next, as I'm quite happy with it right now. For what I use it for, it's fine.

Fantastic build! The only criticism I have is the RAID 0. Just don't.

That's a huge improvement in just a year, and it looked good to begin with :D.

Great work, NZXT make some subtle, yet beautiful cases. That case is huge and dwarfs the system a little, however with the side panel on it looks smashing and I am sure airflow through the case is brilliant. Have you considered push/pull, you have more than enough clearance by the look of it.

Great build!

The sleeving on the graphics card power could be a little bit more "untangled". Also i would get a black or sleeved (or both) sata cable (the red one) other then that, great build.

There does seem to be room for a push pull setup, but as of now, I do not need it. I have been thinking of going for a custom loop in the future though.

I have bitfenix black sleeved sata cables, the red sata cable was only there while I was transferring the data from the old HDD, thanks for the advice on the gpu cables, I might look at them soon.

A little messy with the PCI-E cables but hey I guess you tried your best. I find it really weird to see the H100 being mounted like that though lol.

Other then that good job with the build :)

Thanks, the cable management on the original build was a bit rushed, and the case didn't have a lot of room behind the mobo tray. His actual pc is quite amazing though, I've got to get some pics of it to show you guys.

Thanks, it was mounted there at first as the rear case fan is in the way, it's on my to do list to make that neater, that and the PCI-E cables.

Would something like a raid 1 or 5 be better?

I'm guessing you went with RAID 0 for speed and you didn't care for redundancy or needed all 4TB (am I right?).

In that case, RAID 1 is useless to you because it will leave you with 2TB to work with, although it means you have two copies of the same files. RAID 5 is more cost effective to RAID 1, but you need at least three identical drives to begin with (even if one drive fails, you can retrieve all your data).

Either way, I recommended not using RAID 0 because you lose all your data even if one drive fails. Unless you really need the speed and have backups else where, keep it, otherwise invest in another 2TB WD Green and setup a RAID 5, or simply keep the two drives you have now separate. Hope this helps :)

I went for Raid 0 for speed, I don't need all 4TB, so I may change to Raid 1, as the drives are going to be used for program/media files, as long as the performance is better than having a single drive.

RAID 1 performance over a single drive is questionable. It depends heavily on drivers and/or RAID controller, though I think most modern drivers should have that sorted.
