Chasing 4K

TymmVonD

I told myself that 4K was gonna have to wait when I built my Prodigy rig. I'd hold off on the display and wait for a single GPU that could do it. Well... I bought a Samsung 55HU8550. So now what? It has HDMI 2.0, but the GPU doesn't. So I suppose a DP to HDMI 2.0 adapter is on the horizon, hopefully. And anticipating this adapter... I ordered-

Corsair Air 540

MSI Z97 Gaming 7

and 2nd Vapor-X R9 290

So, I should be able to play with decent 4K settings at 30fps. Expect pics in a few days, and my results with a few games.

Pics coming 5/29.

UPDATED

There are more of pics throughout the pages.

K4qJkUH.jpg

PIWFqya.jpg

Look above at the top card. Thermal paste seeping out of the backplate and block. Had to return both. Used to love Sapphire. The coolest cards out there but this shouldn't have left the factory.

I ran it at 3840x2160/30Hz. All Ultra and 4XMSAA. I expected it to be unplayable, but it held Vsync at 30 pretty well with an occasional drop to 11fps. My only thing is, I expected it to look amazing, but it really doesn't. I even got my face in it and the textures didn't impress me. Then again, I'm used to 1080 on a 27", so going to 4k 55" is like 4 27s. I'm sure it's jaw dropping running 4K on a 27".

The pics span 3 pages, so my latest pic of whole setup here.

So uh if you're going to pay two grand for a "monitor", would doubling up the 290 be out of the question?

You are kinda stuck with 30hz. BTW I live in middle TN as well! Try returning the GPU you ordered and find one with HDMI 2.0

I honestly had no clue the HDMI 2.0 spec TVs were out. I was under the impression I would be stuck with 2160p/30 for awhile if I bought one. This one will play 60fps content. The Netflix content is at 60, I believe. My PC is in my TV room so I have cables running to both my monitor and UHDTV. For gaming, it'll mostly be on my monitor, with the occasional single player game in native 4K...though the upscaler is amazing. Even on Xbone, there is no(almost invisible) aliasing.

Cool, I'm in Lawrence County. I'm sure a displayport to HDMI 2.0 adapter will be available soon. BUT...I have read that the cabling and pinouts are the same from 1.4a to 2.0, so it'll work. From the reviews I've read on people trying the same thing, these adapters aren't capable of sending the bandwidth. Hence, I'm waiting for a 2.0 certified adapter. BTW, the TV can be divided into 4 zones, so I could literally run 4 HDMI cables.....but seriously, I don't think so.

how is the latency on that tv

( you can notice by moving a mouse cursor on the screen for me its very noticeable on TVs)

is there a "game mode" on the tv ?

There is a game mode, but I believe it disables upscaling so I don't use it. I played a bit of Watch_Dogs at 1080 on it.  I did notice, going from 144Hz to the UHD gives PERCEPTIBLE lag.  I used to game on a Samsung plasma that was .001ms in game mode, so it's definitely way slower than that. The TV is an IPS display, so best case scenario would put me around 5ms G2G, but I doubt it. Once the rig is finished, I'm gonna run game mode and native 2160p, then I'll update all interested how it feels.

I didn't plan on buying UHD until next year, but the TV we were using was really bad. Because of it, I swore off Smart TVs, but this new Samsung has a quad core and is way snappier I just completed my current rig last month, and I didn't "want" to upgrade for another year. Either way, I'll be able to max my refresh or get close for at least a year of gaming. The 2nd 290 was out of the question because I'm running an ITX mobo. I had to order another mobo. I didn't want to do that.

Look above closely at top card. This is before I ever ran them. This is during the build. Can clearly see thermal paste seeping out. It's not as bad as after it was run, but it's apparent now.

Cool. I really like that you mounted those speakers. I am by no means a audiophile with the need for elaborate speakers but looks really neat. Saves space too.

Thanks. At some point, the PC was the bedroom media PC. So instead of going with built in, I splurged $69 on those bad boys. My desk now, is so cramped with them standing side-by-side.

After problems with crossfire in Watch Dogs and one card today, fan started running at 100% and stopped showing up in device manager. I reinstalled the drivers and restarted. The card showed up again, but was artifacting in games, so I returned and ordered 2x reference 780 Tis.

I had a ref 780 last year. I'll probably sand off the green Geforce again, where it will glow white instead.

Nice build what 780Ti's did you order?

or something similar.

Maybe, keep the black parts black, and paint the metal parts turquoise. It would probably be easier to tint the rubber Led part.
