How Does My PC Build Look?

So I've posted about this here before, but since then, I've made a few changes. I just have a few questions to take into account for this. For details, I'm trying to keep it as close to $2000 as I can. I'm in the St. Louis, MO area. This thing is targeted towards gaming at 1080p, 60fps for as long as possible without upgrading. This thing is also targeted at being bought and built around Christmas, so late 2014 and if something goes wrong somehow, early 2015.

My questions are, what things should I be prepared to switch out due to better parts coming out? I know GPU's are the big ones, but when are we looking at new Nvidia cards coming out? And also, is that Z97 board worth taking?

The other is, is it better to invest in a 850w PSU for future SLI when upgrading is necessary? Or should I go with a lower one, and when its time to upgrade, just sell my card and buy a newer one?

@McBryBry Get a K series i5 instead of an i7 (no benefit to an i7 for gaming), go to 8 gigs of memory, drop the optical drive, PSU is overkill (650-700 watts is a good target for this build as it will allow you to upgrade later if you want), remember you need to budget for an operating system (if you already have a copy of window put the money towards a 780 ti). My two cents. Hope this helps.

Edit. Maybe something like this (assuming you already have an OS) http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3K3d8

looks really nice, 16gb of ram is overkill for gaming, no games require more than 4.5gb...so 8gb would be way enough unless you have some specific use...

PSU is also overkill but if you plan on going SLI in the future wich from the specs i guess you probably will then it's justified, great build, good job!

The core i7 is also not justified for current games but for ''future proofing'' reasons it can be justified too...in 2 or 3 years from now who knows what the next gen games will bring?

So all in all i would only reduce ram to 8gb and make sure you include win 8.1 for gaming..

I did forget to mention, I really want to heavily, HEAVILY mod Bethesda games. Skyrim is my big self imposed project once this thing is in my hands, and the reason its sitting on 16GB of RAM is because rumor has it that that is better for this kind of thing? I don't know, you guys tell me lol.

On operating systems, there's a reddit thread neogaf has pointed me to that throws them out for cheap.

To justify my optical drive, I have the unfortunate condition of having and collecting a lot of blu rays lol.

And to @Saladin, is the 780Ti worth the extra cash compared to a regular 780?

Just re-read your post. If you are planning on waiting until Christmas, planning now has little use other than getting a general sense a price point. Between now and end of this year you are looking at a CPU/MOBO refresh (Devils Canyon, at the very least), a possible/probable GPU refresh (Nvidia 8xx series cards), as well as continuing price changes on all parts/components (SSD and HDD drives continue to come down in price per gig).

@McBryBry

It is far to early to plan out a system that wont be purchased until the end of the year.  There are a lot of new Intel processors coming out in a few weeks, so new technology will be out, along with price drops across the board.  Possibly the 800 series of graphics cards will come out in Q4 also.

It wont hurt to learn and educate yourself on components leading up to the purchase, but to plan out the build now isn't going to help much other than having a rough idea of the type of system that you want.

Off the top of my head:

i7-4790k

Z97 motherboard

16GB of RAM

GTX 780 or GTX 880 (Ti is bad value, you are paying $200 more for only 10-15% improved performance when you could just overclock your 780)

I made a few changes to your list, but you still have the same overall performance. I got rid of the blu-ray because it isn't necessary for gaming at the moment.  Also 16GB of memory is overkill but I left that alone just in case.

Looks really great actually.  A thought though..... You could always downgrade from that i7 to an i5 4670k (If you're only looking for gaming, they perform about the same!) and use the extra money to upgrade to a 780 Ti.  Then you can overclock the CPU with that beautiful H100i.
