Audioengine's A5+ speakers... yeah this is my review of them. I can spoil the surprise a little bit here though if you're clever enough to read the descriptions of videos before you watch them. They're pretty freakin' smurf...

OMGAD so excited for this review even though I know the result (thanks for that, Linus -.- )!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: On a different note, @LinusTech, I know you haven't listened to the dedicated AudioEngine S8 sub-woofer, but do you think getting the P8 with the A5+ makes sense in terms of money spent to get that extra bit of thump?

Think I've found my new speakers :) Course it'll take a bit to save up for them, I assume Audio Engine's S8 Sub would work well with it, or would they not even be necessary for a non-audiophile like myself?

So, now that your series on these speakers is complete, a small question, if you don't mind.

Is it worth upgrading from the Bose Companion 5 set to this set? The included bass module is a definite plus, as you also mentioned, but I just don't know if the overall audio quality is worth an upgrade.

Of course, perhaps rigging the Bose bass module to work in addition to the Audioengines is definitely a great option as well, but just speaking in terms of audio quality here, is it worth it?

I am wondering on how do these speakers that you have tested compare to Corsair SP2500.

You did a video on them a while ago. And since you have used all of them you should be able to give us some perspective on how they are.

The O2/Odac are headphones amps and not powered speaker amps. It will not work. I recommend a Lepai 2020A+ amp instead. As for which one, Personally I would go with the A5+ for a cleaner look.

I wonder why these and most other desktop speakers don't have bass and treble knobs. For me it's absolutely vital to have those. Apart from having neighbours I want to finetune every song quickly by myself - at least a bit.

You should be listening to high resolution 24-bit 192khz, SACD, VINYL, not movie tracks which aren't really high resoluton "when released" or gameplay footage.  Unless you chose that as that is what most people would be listening to them with?

You can also run these passively to, with a awesome amp that is.

While I do listen to my own FLAC rips and high quality mp3's, some vinyl rips etc (don't actually like these very much.  Too much additional noise for me) I find that most of my usage is watching tv shows, movies, netflix, games, youtube.  So as a broad spectrum this review matches more correctly what I, and I feel 99% of purchasers, are using these for.

These speakers are for everyone who wants them, likes them and can afford them.

Kef Q300Ws would do much better for TV, movies, and obviously music.   Also has options to Bi-Amp or Bi-Wire, I Bi-Aamped as I had Speaker B terminals which I used and works great as they have their own amp and is separated.

They also cost $200 more and quality speaker wire, just get high gage wire, a pair of wire stripers, some banana plugs or spades(spades have a wider surface area but direct wire works best bur corrosion man!

That noise you're hearing is surface is noise, if you're playing a clean record with a clean stylus you will not hear this and trust me I don't unless I'm listening to 50 year old beatles albums which are almost in perfect condition + original pressing with original shrinkwrap!   Even then the noise is low to doesn't exist and still sounds fantastic.

Movies go for that big booming, loud sound, and in yoh face!  The only way to listen to speakers is with a high fidelity recording, gosh... I sound like a grandpa right about now and I'm only 25!

But you also have an expense if either going with stereo blocks, monoblocks(be prepared to say goodbye to your hard earned dollars! you will miss them when a high quality and truly high end mono block costs around $1,500-2000+)

Another thing I wish people would really think about, in a small room surround is not great, in a movie theater the room is very large and your living room is maybe 1/8th, or maybe even 1/10th the size so guess what?  High quality speakers in a stereo configuration saves money and also gives you amazing sound throughout all of your media and devices.    I hate the term audiophile because it means it's targeting those with a golden ear, no one has that amazing ear, yes some can hear better than others.  But back 50 years ago high end sound was affordable and still beats out even high quality 24-bit 196khz high resolution audio.   Physical tape will sound better than digital, actually anything recorded in the analogue spectrum will sound better because nothing is lost as digital would because it's being read as 1s and 0s and being converted into an analogue wave which is really just a choppy knockoff of the whole sound doesn't mean it does not sound great it will but not against the full sound you would find on a tape master.

This is half dredging up an old post but insomnia so I well. Lol. To answer your question, sp2500 is nothing special. The a5+ would stomp over it.

Think I've found my new speakers :) Course it'll take a bit to save up for them, I assume Audio Engine's S8 Sub would work well with it, or would they not even be necessary for a non-audiophile like myself?

I've had the original A5's + S8 + D1 DAC and, to be honest, I found it overkill.  These speakers are already very bass-strong and I found myself turning the sub down to the point that it was virtually inaudible. Unless you're playing a lot of club mixes or using these in a very large space where the subwoofer can be placed away from the main speakers, I would recommend going with the 2.0 setup first, then adding the A8 only if you feel the bass is lacking.

Speaking of large spaces...I'm still running the basic A5's, but these speakers are LOUD.  I have a very open loft space (15 foot ceilings, about 800 sqft. of open floorspace) where we just shot a music video and we used these for playback. Initially, the director was a little concerned that they'd be too quiet, particuarly with the crew and set dressing, but after a single test he was convinced.  At 3/4 volume, they could easily drown out the drummer.  We even had a neighbor stop by to complain!  Now, normally, that wouldn't be a highlight, but in the interest of power assessment, I'd say that's a plus.

I'm currently using my A5's as an all-in-one 2.0 AV/Projector setup (in the same loft) and I couldn't be happier with the results. Most people jump straight to surround sound when they think of movie playback; however, I really believe that 5.1 setups and beyond need proper installation and calibration in the correct environment to really produce an enhanced listening experience.  In my space, I tend to think that less is more — it reduces echo, keeps the sound clean, and the output on these is clearly enough to keep the audience happy.  In fact, I like them so much that I'm considering upgrading to the A5+, because I need to remount them and the newer versions come with speaker mounts, which would really help me out.  Based on everything I've read, they would definitely be worth the time.  Thanks for the review!
