Turn stuff off... and on

elkenrod

I wired up some rocker switches, and mounted them in an optical bay.  I plan on hooking up a number of things to them, like some case LEDs.  Today however, Just want to turn my fans off.  All of them.  The problem is that many fan controllers do not allow you to set fan speed at 0%.  The ones that do let you, are often not the best.  I have an NZXT sentry mix 2, which is excellent, save the fact that I can not turn the fans off.  I also do not like software solutions for fan control (I am that person).

So, my compromise is that I connect all my fans to the controller (yes, even the CPU fans).  Then I connect the controller to the switch.  If I am recording audio I want the room to be as quiet as possible and I have a simple and quick solution.  If I'm using a second Operating System, I don't want to worry about finding a second software solution for managing fan speed.  Yes, automatic controls are nice.  But for me, I either want them off or on.  Silent or audible.  I've found that the following works for me.

I rigged this out of a 5.25 bay drawer and a face plate

Fans need to be quiet while I record stuff!

As a disclaimer, the heat sink on my CPU is more than enough to handle heat dissipation without a fan.   If I play a match of Titanfall at "high" settings, the CPU temps will reach 55C max.  Upon turning the fans back on, temps will go back down to 38 in a few seconds.

That's awesome, I wish there was a similar solution to buy. Not just for fan noise either, I like LEDs but I don't like them on ALL the time. Some can be turned off but no such thing as an LED fan that can have its lights turned off as far as I know.
