Lest we forget

I want to make a thread about ANZAC day seeing as there isn't one yet. Next year is the 100th year of the ANZACs landing at Gallipoli and I hope this tradition will still be here for at least the 200th anniversary.

I'm hoping people can share their stories and who went to the dawn service in Gallipoli, I've gone to the dawn service (not in Gallipoli, I'm not that rich) for the past 4 years, every time I get the feels.

It was when the ANZACs landed at Gallipoli. The British navigators completely missed the actually landing zone and found themselves right in front of Turks on high ground with artillery and machine guns. It was a bloody campaign and they were pulled out during the winter, the losses were great.

Just did some research on it, very interesting. You may find it interesting that Canada had a similar conflict during world war II at Dieppe, France, where we took great losses on a failed beach landing

Well I wouldn't expect non-Australian and NZ members to know what I'm talking about, really. There was a lot of failed campaigns in WW1 so one that your country wasn't involved in doesn't surprise me that you don't know about it.

New weapons of mass destruction were being developed, mustard gas as you said was one of them. Since the knowledge about what was actually happening in the trenches so young men just joined and thought it was going to be an "adventure" and an opportunity to see the world, if only they knew.

Gallipoli was a millitary campain during world war one, on the south coast of turkey. It involved mainly Australian and New Zealand troops, and also some British and Canadian. Our side was pinned down on a hill for months and the casulty rate for Australia/New Zealand troops was over 65%, thanks to British generals bad desicions and sacrificing people over the trenches. ANZAC (Australia - New Zealand Army Corps) day is to commemorate all Australian/New Zealand sacrifices in war. Kina like a seperate rememberance day for us :D

Yep, you pretty much summed it all up. There was a really bad mistake on the Brits half of the timing of the artillery to soften up the Turks' front line. The bombardment stop short and they were sent over still, with all the machine guns and troops all set up ready to kill anything that moved over the trench. That was one of the major losses during the campaign.

To give you an idea it's for the remembrance of the join Aussie/Kiwi infantry units that landed at Galipoli peninsula during the first world war. The troops were there for 9 months and accomplished nothing at all due to poor command and supplies - i.e bright white backpacks on a neutral coloured hillside.

In recent time it's become a bit of a bitter day for some, mainly the more recent veterans of Afghanistan who see that Anzac day has been overly commercialized and more of a history lesson and less about remembering and helping those who have served more recently.

Shame that things like this aren't taught in schools here.
