770 4Gb or R9 290

Im thinking about to upgrade my gaming PC in next 4 month or so. Right now, i have a 27" HD monitor, i want get 3 cheep Korea monitor, the 27" 1440P ones. Also I need to upgrade my GPU. I dont know should I get 290 or 770 4G.

This is my rig now.

3770K@4.8Ghz @1.29volt on H100 

Sabertooth Z77

Vengeance 2X8G 1866 CL10

Galaxy 660Ti 3Gb

Intel 520 SSD + 1TB Black WD

yeah, there are many people online who say that just throwing on a bigger frame buffer does very little. If you start doing large images, the GPU isn't going to be able to pump frames out fast enough to fill up all that unless you're over-clocking in Antarctica. 290 all the way bro.

Definitely! Just make sure you get one with a non-reference cooler ;)

The 290 isn't in the same league as the 770, rather the 780. So if your choosing between the 770 and 290 than it's a no brainer.

The R9 290 is a fair bit faster than the GTX770 (to add, it has 512bit memory interface which is great for high res gaming), it is more or less the GTX780's competitor. Some peeps harp about the heat issue on the R9 290, that's only true for the reference model, but with a slew of 3rd party cooled models, that isn't a concern anymore. Bear in mind though, even a single GTX780 Ti/R9 290X would have a fair bit of stress pushing triple 2560x1440 screens.....unless it is a less graphically intensive game like Dead Space and Bioshock series. For games like Crysis 3 and Metro LL, you'd most definitely have to tone down ingame graphics setting.

 

I'd suggest Sapphire Tri-X, PowerColor PCS+ or TurboDuo, MSI Gaming 4G, Asus DCU II and such....

this - because the 290 has a bigger width bus meaning it can actually use the 4gb of Vram whereas the 770 will cap out at 2.5gb maybe a bit more

The only advantage to the 770 here is the lower TDP. An R9 290 will rip through easily 350W at benchmarking loads. As long as you have a good PSU, you'll have a blast with that card tho

The PowerColor PCS+  R9 290 is great, I use it in my rig and Crysis 3 is silky smooth.

Without question it's worth the extra $50, as stated, it's a fair bit more powerful than the GTX770 plus it has 512bit memory interface (vs 256bit on the GTX770) to fully use the 4GB VRAM available to it.

The PowerColor TurboDuo is $350, which is cheaper than a lot of 2GB GTX770s, let alone 4GB.
