Will you be using these for music and/or gaming? If yes, what kinds of music?

1. 300$ is not a huge budget for audiophile headphones. 2. I can recommend the Beyerdynamic 880 Premiums. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0024NK35S/ref=twister_B00AW715HS I ended up going for the T90's the higher end model but i also really liked the sound of the 880 Premiums.

I second the 880 Premiums.

And I would consider $1000 budget for a full fledged audiophile as decent

The Audio Technica ATH M50s are great headphones on a budget.

I would also recommend the Sennheiser HD598's or Sennheiser HD558's. Excellent Sound Stage headphones

And if you need a microphone to make it a headset, the Antlion Modmic is an excellent attatchment for headphones. But if you're willing to wait, the new ModMic 4.0 is soon to be released. Supposed to be a phenominal microphone

While most of the things mentioned above are great, what are you looking for in a headphone? Do you want it to be neutral and analytic, open or closed? Bass heavy?

Second this. $300 might be a big budget for headsets, but not for good headphones. You can easily spend more than $1000 for good audiophile headphones (considering they need decent amps and stuffs).

Yesterday I tried the Sony MDR-1R, and it's actually amazing. Albeit being closed headphone, it got decent soundstage, good but not overpowering bass, nice clarity. Comfy on the head too. Might want to look into that. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR1R-Premium-Over--Headphones/dp/B009A6CZ30/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398398972&sr=8-1&keywords=sony+mdr+1r

Haven't tried the 880, so you may be right. To OP: well, the best option is to go to an audio store, one with various demo units. Try them out and pick the one you like. Treat all the suggestions in this thread as a reference, and find one that suits you.
