When I tried to do it, it turned out that I would have to change my entire Google+ name. Which you can only do so many times in a certain amount of time.

I changed my google+ name 1 time so far and you get around 3 chances in 2 years. The problem is that it  asks for my first and last name instead of letting me put in one username to be recognized by.

Yeah. Thats why I split my username up. Instead of having one long username, its set as more of an alias.

I just did it through YouTube about a month ago, it must have been before they'd linked it to a G+ account creation. When I made it it was just a YouTube account attached to a Gmail account.

No, what you did was another type of channel, those are used for business/entertainment channels.

It's what I did:

https://www.youtube.com/user/accursedentity

No name or last names, just my nickname. It's an option for a separate channel while using the same google account too.

(!)Just in case for the CoC of this forum, I don't upload videos at all so I am not advertising my 0 videos channel, just showing proof.

Google Dashboard and chose an Alias instead of your name.

Yes, it's better to do a new channel, you can still use the same Google account thou.

YouTube Settings>Overview>Additional features>See all my channels or create a new channel>Create new channel

Remember to choose "other" as the type of channel, you can then use whatever name you want.
