For HTPC use Mac(OS X) is worthless, it's piss poor.

Either set up linux or windows :P

Windows 8.1 is actually quite nice for HTPC use. The Modern UI allows for input flexibility.

Get a NUC and use Plex Home Theatre with it.

Windows 8 is particularly suited for being an HTPC, or any version of Windows with XBMC or Plex Media Center.
