Macbook Pro Mid-2012 A1278

DarrenP

Hi guys,

I have a question, after looking on the internet for a while, i cannot seem to find anywhere what type of monitor panel this laptop has. I have this laptop and i'm shopping for a new monitor for my desktop and i want to get the same panel type. I know it's not IPS. I'm guessing it's TN. Maybe you guys could help if you know.

Thanks

"widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display (1280x800 native resolution)."

Found that TFT what is that like? In terms of desktop monitors?

13.3" Widescreen Native Resolution: 1280x800 Details: 13.3" color widescreen LED-backlit TFT active-matrix "glossy" display with a 1280 by 800 native resolution.

This was all I could find, it isn't the Retina Display model, (like mine) and I believe it is TN. Like you, I cannot find the panel type of this monitor.

If I had to guess though, I would say that it is an IPS panel. The only reason I say this is that Macbooks are used by many content creators, so presumably Apple would use the higher color accuracy of an IPS panel. This is 100% a guess though.

I love the fact it's not retina, my Mum has this one: http://store.apple.com/ca/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=ME294LL/A&step=config

Despite it having a lot of power i don't like the Retina display. I love the display on my Macbook, just wish it was 1920x1080 :P Thanks for your help!

Anymore help is appreciated.

What why? WHAT

I am pretty sure it is a TN panel like the current PRO and AIR uses, only the retina pro uses IPS from my memory

I don't like having that many pixels on a 15.6" display... It's like you have to look through a magnifying glass to see anything.

The display is set up wrong - Set the display to "best for retina" not to "more space"

OSX supports DPI scaling - that means that everything on screen is the same size as the normal mac but is comprised of higher resolution graphics

No i mean im not sure you understand how it works

the screen being "retina" doens't make things smaller. you can scale the display to give you more space because of the resolution but that is not really how you are meant to use the display.

Side by side icons and text between a macbook and a retina macbook are the same, just the retina ones are sharper

I know you can change that. I just wasn't allowed to and out of the box it's set up like that. I don't like it :P

Oh it shouldn't be. out of the box should be "best for retina" - thats how all the macs I sell come out the box....odd

Anyway yeah that retina screens are IPS as are the iMacs, but the pro and air use TN panels - just VERY good ones
