AMD FX-9370 overkill worth it?

In my upcoming build I don't know if I should put a FX-9370 in it or a FX-8350. I will put a 280x GPU in, and propably when the whole build is finished, I will put another 280x in. Opinions?

You are essentially paying $30 USD for it to come factory overclocked for you by 0.4 GHZ. You can do that yourself for free.

I would just get the FX8350.

4770K and keep it for years to come! Right now FX 8320 is the budget friendly gaming/powerhouse CPU, 4670K gaming specialized and 4770K the king of the hill for everything but at a price.

I find it hard to recommend the 8350 over the 8320 for the price difference. Most 8320s can do 4.4GHz and most 8350s can do 4.5/4.6GHz.

Same applies to the 9370.

I would get the 9370 if you're buying from microcenter

in that case you can't justify getting the 8350 over the 8320 because your paying more for the same cpu overclocked!   the price/ghz ratio is something to consider. the fx9370 is actually better value in the uk right now than any of the others

A 9370 is decent because it can go higher in speed per voltage then an 8350. So you are not paying just for "An overclocked 8350" You're paying for a higher binned CPU. For 30 dollars that is not bad especially if you are planning for very high overclocks. Just remember that it will pull a good bit of voltage and sticking it on a cheap board or a board that doesn't have 8+2 power phase design will cause you issues.

How about the 9590?

The 9590 i 300mhz faster than the 9370, but it cost more over the 9370 than the 9370 does over the 8350. It is also only £10 less than a 4770k

you can go for the 9570 if it's cheap, like really cheap. Also you have to consider that you need a beefy cooler along with a beefy motherboard for that cpu.

Overall, the 8320 is still a better option imo

6300 imo. No need for more cores

apart from if you play bf4 and crysis 3

BF4 doesnt take advantage of 8 cores anyways: http://cdn.overclock.net/1/1f/500x1000px-LL-1fa7a24a_3350949334973.png

Only crysis 3 does atm but the gpu people pair with 8350's, they'd be even limited by that gpu on a 6300.

Of course they would

If you were going to spend $229 for a FX-9370, you would be better off buying a i5-4670k for $209. Right now core performance exceeds core count. This will not change until DirectX 12 is out, and adopted by game developers late 2015 to early 2016. So sometime late 2016 we should see the first DirectX 12 game. Until then, 4 fast cores > 8 slow cores.

Of course they would

Just did quickly a test with 6 cores enabled vs 12 in a cpu bound situation:

Not really seeing any point of buying a 8350 or 9370 if youre just gaming. Not sure if he already has the 280x, if he doesnt he should spend that 100$ on a better gpu. If he already has the 280x: He's better off saving that 100$ and adding 100$ for a 2nd 280x: http://tweakers.net/aanbod/657754/sapphire-r9-280x-3gb-gddr5-oc-dual-x-lite-retail.html
